After you accessed the admin area of your website click on Configuration and E-Mail Options tabs. The first option (E-Mail Transport Method) defines if this server uses a local connection to send mail or uses an SMTP connection via TCP/IP. Servers running on Windows and MacOS should change this setting to SMTP.

SMTP Mailer can be either Mandrill or Swiftmailer.

SMTP settings can be different depending on the server:

SMTP Host can be either the IP address or the domain name,

SMTP Port can be set up differently.

SMTP Username and Password are almost always required to avoid spammers.

SMTP Encryption is set up as regular, without encrypting.
