wholesale sites

I run an Oscommerce store that sells specialty items. I think we do reasonably well and have no complaints with our current business, however I'm curious about wholesale sites and how well people do with them. It seems to me that there are a few really big wholesale companies that sell to tons and tons of small business owners who sell their stuff online. Its the American way for sure. However I've often wonder how many of these wholesale sites maintain a sustainable business with so much of the same merchandise floating around. Anyone want to comment?

Also, where do people get this merchandise from? Like...contact lenses. I just bought lenses from a random site that I found had the best price for the disposables that I wear. Well, upon checkout I discovered that this site was merely an extension of another site that I could have also purchased from. Now I'm all confused. *L* Did the people that shipped me my contacts receive my order online, call up their parent company who then sent the contacts to the people from the first site and then on to me? Or did I receive my contacts from the parent company? (The return address on my box indicated the former, but that doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense). And even further, how did the parent company become a contact lens wholesaler? If i wanted to sell contact lenses, is it true that all I have to do is find a supplier and put in a big order?

I'm very curious about all this wholesaling stuff. Plus its Monday and I'm putting off all of my "real work" til later in the week when its genuinely crunch time. Surely someone has time to waste with me and help satisfy my curiosities. *L*

merci,

They probably used a dropshipper service. Whereas the company you bought from gets a discounted price for selling the product of the parent company. So on the company's website they mark it up a certain amount. When they make a sale, the sale gets fowarded to the parent company who ships the order out with the mailing label of the company you bought from. The company you bought from pays the parent company at the discounted rate and keeps the mark-up they put on the product.

Dropshipping contact lenses?

Let me be honest, I really didn't understand what dropshipping was til recently, but it seems that contact lenses are just a little too....regulated(?) for dropshipping. Can people really do that?

I've spent a little time googling and browsing some dropshipping websites and I guess I haven't really been impressed by what I've seen. I wouldn't get close to some of these little bobbles with a 10 foot pole. Do people really buy this stuff?
