cgchris99 Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Testing keywords against my competition who also has an oscommerce store. I seen something really weird tonight. I don't want to provide exactly who it is or what keywords but here is what I see. So I will provide completely fake domain name.s They have two domains. myfullfakename.com and xyzname.com But the really strange thing is in google both domains show up under the keywords AND when I put it a brand & model keyword here is what I see. xyz.com/majorkeyword-brand-model.asp. It is an osc store and you end up at the index.php page when you put in the above link or click on the google link. But if I select their manufacturer dropdown and pick the manufacturer, the link displayed in the title bar is the one above with the .ASP on the end. So it appears that they are breaking the google TOS. One for duplicate domain and two they are using doorway pages and three the page is different if it is google vs a live user. I don't really understand how they are doing this, but they are beating me for the keyword searches and I dont' like it.
♥ecartz Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html is the link to report abuse to Google. Hth, Matt Always back up before making changes.
cgchris99 Posted June 30, 2004 Author Posted June 30, 2004 I have been told recently that what they are doing is kind of a gray area. They also mentioned that this will probably not get them banned. I was also told by others that issuing the spam report rarely gets someone banned. It takes many spam reports before they will look into it. This is the bad part about google. They cannot define what is acceptable or not. If you push the envelope of acceptable practices, you are likely to get high search engine placement but also risk banning.
