How to set Shipping prices based on location?

Is there some how-to-documentation on how to set up shipping prices depending on locations.

For example. LOCAL to my home state would include California sales tax. Then NATIONAL witch includes shipping prices within the US. And to set shipping prices for International, outside of the U.S.

Is there someone that can help me make sense of how to charge based on these three criteria? Am I looking at this in the right way?

Thanks.

you could do it by zone...

make ca zone 1

all other usa state zone 2

alaska and hawaii zone 3

other countries zone 4

then charge by zone a price

you have the ability in the shipping module to use zone rates, in there you can set the zone1 countries and the price you want to charge.

that may not help you though, cause I think you will need 4 zones

Is there anything to charge people based on 4 different zones? or do I need to think about how I carge people differently?

A lot of my customers will be from the U.S., but the majority will be overseas.

Witing for an answer here myself I want to have 2 different zones. One to the Continental US and Canada and one for Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands this is based on price and not on weight and it doesn't matter how the products are shipped, I jest need to set 2 different prices for these 2 zones. I would think I have to set up a different shipping table.

With our shop thats opening soon were going to be incorporating the USPS shipping module that pulls shipping data (US, Canada, Overseas) straight from their database based on the weight and zone/shipto address. We are only going to have 1 shipping option and thats Priority which under 1lb is $3.85 anywhere in the US. Over 1lb it gets smarter and starts using the state zones and weight dependecies to give the final shipping total.

The #1 reason I installed this was the discrepencies in shipping from site to site. If I give a customer a USPS logo and the exact amounts they are happier than if I said "Alright gimme $7.00...oh wait you added another item, lets make it $10 even".

Hope this helps you in deciding on a shipping style/module.

Will it work with the default USPS module, or is there an additional contrib you have to install?

THanks.
