Question about approach to integrating

I apologize because I would normally spend a few hours reading here before asking such a question, but my time today is very limited unfortunately...

That being said, I have a potential client looking to start an ecommerce site using a 3rd party vendor and I'm leaning heavily towards this package based on lots of feedback I've read over the past year and personal interest.

My question is: When designing a site from scratch, should i plan to install oscommerce FIRST, and then build my site design around that?

More preferably, I'm looking to build oscommerce INTO my site. Is this possible given that I design so that I have a main content area to plug oscommerce into (or inversely create a header/footer for oscommerce?)

Also, I've read that I can calculate shipping in real time via ups, etc. Will it allow for the generation of a tracking number so clients can follow the package all the way to their doorstep?

Thanks for any help!

Regards,

Jason

There is a contribution for this which gives you the tags to use for including various options, by default the bulk of this site is installed in a catalog directory, so you just setup the front end of your site how you like then point the shop part to the catalog directory, or use the contrib as first mentioned.

contrib here:- Simple Template System

hope this helps

Thank you, that does help. I'm hoping to not link "out" of the custom template into something more stock, so hopefully I can study the tags to create my own layouts within my normal site structure. That's a great start. Thanks!

Can someone answer the question about tracking? They want the order to generate a tracking number so that the end user can login and view the status (whether it's shipped), what the tracking number is, and where the package is enroute. Is this all built in?

Thank you,

Let me clarify, I assume the site owner will have to login and manually enter in this tracking number and package shipping progress manually, but is this still possible so the end users can login to view their status?

Thanks,

If you run a dummy sale thru your shop, you will see in the back end that it generates an order id for the customer, this is just a number that increments every time an order is placed and is placed on the invoice, the end user is able to log into their account and see the status at anytime when theygoto "my account"

also both the admin and the client receive an email with this order number in it, the status of shipping is set by admin in the backend.
