lostxpinoy Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I made a topic earlier about how long my site takes to load. Could it be that my VPS specs are not up to snuff with my osCommerce site? My current VPS specs: Min. 128Mb Ram Min. 150+Mhz. CPU Could this be the problem with my pages parsing slowly? I also have well over 2000 products in numerous categories. If I switch to a truly dedicated server will it help matters? Another host I am looking at is a truly dedicated one with a P4 1.7 Ghz CPU and 512 DDR SDRAM. I've noticed when I have a few (3-5) customers on my site and I check my server status, it's warning me of my CPU load. I have a few advertising campaigns that are going to go live soon and I need a solution that will enable me to offer the best experience for my customers. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Daemonj Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 The catch part with a VPS account is that you are guaranteed a *minimum* of a server's resources but it only takes one other VPS account to take even that away. Having a dedicated server will *always* improve your performance but you have to be able to justify the cost. The first thing to do is ensure that your site is already setup for optimum performance before sinking money into hardware that you may not need. Ensure that Show Category Counts is false, you are using persistant connections for mysql and apache, you have added indexes to the base database structure, and you are using caching. If those items are in place then you should definitely look into another server. "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. Mark Evans Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I never use VPS hosting for the reason that you only get minimum garuantees. I generally find shared hosting is cheaper than VPS hosting and performs better. lostxpinoy Posted June 23, 2004 Author Posted June 23, 2004 Just finished transferring my site to my new server. Now page parse times are less than 1 second. Before the average page parse time with my old VPS was anywhere from 4-7 seconds. Now I'm a happy man! :D
Guest Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 are you on dedicated or vps? and what did you end up for $ per month
lostxpinoy Posted June 23, 2004 Author Posted June 23, 2004 I was paying about $38 per month on my previous VPS. Now i am on a truly dedicated server that is costing me $79 per month. Not too bad considering the performance increase I received. Now all I gotta do is wait for the domain name to resolve to my new IP. I also paid $10 extra a month for 100Mbps guaranteed throughput (up and down). It's a pretty reasonable deal I think.
