Creating backups!

Is creating a backup neccessary?

 

"Create the dir /admin/backups and set the permissions to 777"

 

I got that from http://wiki.oscommerce.com/helpInstallNew --- All the way at the bottom. If this is neccessary then please advise me on how this is done. thanks

yes backups are definitely necessary. the installation procedures in the knowledge base explain what needs to be done, basically create the folder as you state and set the permissions to 777. permissions are set this way because the program needs to be able to write to the folder, creating files.

how do i create a directory?

you either do that via your host control panel, or your ftp program. look in your host control panel there are many things in there for controlling files, etc.
