jessietll Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Dear all, Do you have any suggestions on the osCommerce's User Interface? What should be added-in and what should be taken off. Regards, Jessie
jessietll Posted June 18, 2004 Author Posted June 18, 2004 Eric, From your mail, would like to suggest to use PHP instead of ASP in enhancing osCommerce System. Because it would be easily extended. In changing the interface design, we could actually focus on 3D interface design and add in some animations (flash and so on) to make the system more 'lifely'. well, just my suggestions....still looking forward for more suggestions
jessietll Posted June 18, 2004 Author Posted June 18, 2004 Interface Enhancement #1 1. Replace the side(static Menu) by Floating Menu. 2. Colour - if not mistaken, i studied before, 3 major colours are sufficient. Would like to suggest to use ligh Green. (as i love green... :P ). then the others two...can follow the logo of osCommerce...blue and Red...but more 3D feel....
jessietll Posted June 19, 2004 Author Posted June 19, 2004 Interface Enhancement #2 Another idea come to my mind now. Still remember the HCI class we attended last few years  ? When designing the new interfaces or buttons, it must be "ease" to be understood by people. Note: 1. Ms. Shee, could you make this as a point in the documentation. 2. Eric and I will going to implement this metaphor philosop~. :D
fcshee Posted June 21, 2004 Posted June 21, 2004 I suggest the design of the website should base on the Gartner Web Evaluation Tool that we learn in MS81IS. It can be a checklist for the design of website.
jessietll Posted June 21, 2004 Author Posted June 21, 2004 Not Bad.....it can use as a checklist to evaluate osCommerce website too...however, shee, does this tool applicable to eCommerce web site?
jessietll Posted June 21, 2004 Author Posted June 21, 2004 Mm...i downloaded the checklist ! i can concluded that this evaluation tool is good and applicable to osCOmmerce site.
fcshee Posted June 21, 2004 Posted June 21, 2004 Jessise, I agree with you for using PHP to enhance the osCommerce System because it is plantform-agnotic. It will run on Linux, solaris, Windows and other OS as well. PHP is faster and more secure than ASP. Any suggestion Eric? :P
ssk Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 It's good to have a try on pHp, however, the user interface should be evaluated based on Web Design Priciples.
Guest Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I suggest the design principle: Authority -What company is responsible for the contents of the website? -Phone number or postal address to contact for more information (beside an email address). -There is a statement that gives the company's name as copyright holder. -There is a link to a page describing the nature of the company, who owns the company and the types of products the company sells.
huafeiliu Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I prefer to design an unattached inter-face for osCommerce and use the osCommerce as the control panel,I am not very familiar with the constructure of the system. Can the next version of the osCommerce system include some parameter functions,so anyone who has the same purpose can easily do that.
Guest Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 Other principles of GUI design: Accuracy Information is free of grammatical, spelling and typographical errors. Objective Common website purposes: -Sell products or services directly over the Internet. Provide ordering system for one or more products with online caterlog. -Create an online brochure that will help potential clients, customers and partners learn about the company. -Provide product information to drive local sales of the products and services at dealer locations. Manufacturers don’t sell on their sites, but point people to retailers who carry their products. -Sell advertising -Earn commissions for sales -Provide customer service and support. -Save money by taking orders online, online catalog and online FAQs. Guest Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 Suggested GUI designs principles Navigation -Consistent navigation (same colours, same shapes, same positions on all pages, same function) -Navigation appear based on a plan: left-side menu, site search in the top right corner, four major categories in black bar at the top, solutions services and shopping in the grey blocks, recent news release, selected popular products highlighted with graphics, company-oriented menu in black bar in the bottom left corners. -Min. scrolling to find content -Site map shows the structure and has links to every page -Tabs near the top of the web page help the visitor quickly see the most important sections of the site. -Larger sites need a search feature so visitors don’t get lost. -Links to other resources (internal or external) on each page
Guest Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Additional GUI design principles Visual design -Site is clean and understated. -Design creative and attractive -Overall design fit the contents and intended users -Design suit the intended site purpose -Design well executed technically -Graphics are few -Photographs are class and professional look. -Page width vs monitor size. Accessibility -Pages are quick to download (less than 20 seconds) -Provide links to download and install plug-ins or viewer for user to download. E.g. Acrobat Reader, Flash Plug-in.
