UPS Shipping Weight

Recommended Posts

Sorry -- the forum site has been so slow today that I have been trying without success all day to search the archives, so forgive me if this has already been answered.

Just tested my order setup, and the UPS shipping shows actual shipping weight (.5 lb, just jewelry) plus 3 lb for everything, totalling 3.5 lbs. I checked and the correct weights are entered on the products. Why is the UPS module adding 3 lbs and how do I make it stop?

Thanks,

Susan

Go to the admin section of your store and check your package tare weight in the Store Config -> Shipping & Packaging section. It's set at 3 by default.

"Tare weight" is designed to add the weight of the packaging to the weight of the product. osCommerce is set (by default) to add either 3 pounds or 10% of the product weight, whichever is larger. The 10% figure is labeled "Larger packages - percentage increase".

As an additional warning for those of you using UPS -- UPS has been adding a fuel surcharge to most of their rates. This surcharge does not show up in the rates returned by the standard UPS interface, or at least they did not the last time I checked. Your shipping costs may be higher than the amount osC has collected for shipping. Using the above percentage is a quick way to fudge the additional charge. Check with UPS for current information on their charges.

In everything I have seen, the UPS rate that comes back is correct. UPS has been doing the fuel surcharge bit for a couple of years now.

The setting of tare weight is one of the unfortunate traps that the default osCommerce install lays out for the newcomer. There is no earthly reason it should be non-zero by default.

I have left the tare at the default setting and I have never collected more than 50 cents over actual shipping which helps to defray the cost of my packaging.

What shipping service do you use that charges only 50 cents for three pounds?

UPS. I didn't say it charged 50 cents for 3 lbs total, but it does only charge 50 cents (approximately) for 3 lbs additional. I assume it's because UPS has certain weight 'classes' within which the increases are insignificant. For example, I shipped a package the other day for which the customer was charged $7.25 with the 3lb tare weight and my actual cost was $6.65. Also keep in mind that I insure any packages over $100 as a practice of good business.

Anyway, I don't believe the situation is the same for everyone as there are many variables to consider, but I can certainly see some 'earthly reasons' why it would be set above 0 by default. :) If we had to pick a default, and we did so by majority, assuming packaging costs, etc would be included in shipping/handling cost (as they should be), then I believe most sellers would require at least some 'padding' of the tare weight to break even. Maybe Seller A only needs 1lb and Seller B needs 3 lbs. Who knows ... as I said, I think it varies by seller.
