Acheron
Well, it's free. Oh and it's free. Did I mention it's free? Aside from that, and despite some of it's quirks and shortcomings, it's an excellent e-commerce solution. What initially drew me to it was the PHP with SQL backend. Most e-coms seem to use ASP/Access which I find to be slow and unreliable by comparison. Also, most ecoms are just plain nasty looking ... like a 10 y/o's homepage. Depending on your needs, osC may be your best choice or it may not be. It suits me just fine though.
tmac2104
It's quite fun to work with... it's like the challenges (while few if you can code at all) are super fun to overcome and you come out smarter whenever you conquer them. There is also tons of support so it's nice. and it's free
GraphicsGuy
Besides it being free... :D one of the main things I like about it is the extreme range of modifications (also free) readily available for it. And if there isn't one that does what you need, the code is wide open so it can be customized. There are mods (contributions) that make it work with virtually every card processor of any merit, all parcel services (and several regiional ones). If you want to see the full extent of this flexibility, spend a little time browsing here: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions And of course, one of best (if not the best) support forum communities around. Rule #1: Without exception, backup your database and files before making any changes to your files or database. Rule #2: Make sure there are no exceptions to Rule #1. joeyjgarcia
I think the deal maker for me was the excellent support from the hundreds of people that frequent these forums daily, especially the General Support Forum. I won't even use the osCommerce knock-offs pre-loaded with contributions because they don't offer the support you can find here. Also, the development team is critical about what it includes in each milestone versus what to leave to Contributions. Since this product is so mature, they are now looking at making it easier to change the look with templates and easier to modify, typically you get to this point after you have all the other features stable. Joey And it's free :D I would have to say the single most important factor is that it Open Source and can be modified to do basically anything you want it to do.
