How to find out if user in on Catalog root page?

Hi OSC community,

 

I'm new here, just installed OSC, like it pretty much! But many thing still confusing to me.

 

One thing I want to do is to have a Home page for the catalog.

 

The homepage will show certain items the rest of the pages will not, for example a welcome banner or intro banner at teh top of the page.

 

How can this be done? I've tried to detect the URL and $_GET['osCsid'] value, but that is no help at all.

 

I hope someone can light my way, I'm very much in the dark.
