murph
I know I've seen it mentioned somewhere before but I can't find it. I have just registered a domain name, it will take a few days by the time the registration is done and then I transfer to the new nameservers. I would like to work on the oscommerce pages in the interim. I have already installed oscommerce but I can't get to the admin section or the pages. Until the domain is transferred I have to access the site via: http://ipnumber:1234 If I type in that and then fill in the username and password I get to the cpanel. But how do I use that and actually see the oscommerce pages and the admin? i.e. if I type in http://ipnumber:1234/admin or /catalog I get an error message saying to login to the ip first, then ask for the page. But if I do the login I only get cpanel etc etc... <_< I'm sure this is something simple but stupid me cannot figure it out! WHAT do I type in the address bar  ? Thanks in advance! Chris Dunning
This works on my server, it should work on yours. This assumes that you know the IP address that your store is hosted on. I'm not sure how it would work with dial-up, but if you have broadband (DSL, cable, etc) then follow these directions. Instructions for Windows XP, modify to fit your needs: Start->Control Panel->Network Connections Select the connection you're using. In the window that pops up, click "Properties" Scroll through the list to find TCP/IP Click to highlight it and click "Properties" Toward the bottom is a selection for either "Obtain DNS address automatically" or "Use the following DNS servers:" Make sure you've selected "Use the following DNS servers." If there's anything in the boxes already, write it down and keep it for later. Plug in your IP address in the box. Click "Close" until you're out of the control panel completely. Now you should be able to load up www.yourdomain.com on your server. Make sure to put the settings back when you're done.
