agiftcodotcom Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Any webmaster that feels it's ok to install worms on your computer or viruses, needs to have that site automatically shut down and they need to be sent to a remote island where they have NO access to real civilization!!! OK, I have a POS 97' HP computer at home. I'm broke and that's all I can afford. Some stinken web site I visited self-installed a worm on my machine that freezes it's 32 megs of memory up like every 3 minutes! As if my machine wasn't slow enough to begin with!! [/rant] Contributions I used : Updated 06-13-04 23:42 ---------------- Vote on My Graphis Poll

cdi-buy.com Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 slap a new memory stick in it for now. that'll give you enough of a boost to reformat.
Guest Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 hmmmmmm, usually the only sites that do that are the ones where you go search for 'serial numbers or hacks' . . .
cdi-buy.com Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 I love searching for hacks & serial numbers. I don't use them of course...

I wish that was the case, unfortunatly people install these things on their web sites because someone is paying them a few cents evertime someone hits it. dreamscape Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Lets flog all windows users on the rack until they ditch it in favour of linux :P and then we can flog all the x86 linux users until they ditch x86 in favor of PPC. and then flog all of the PPC linux users until they ditch linux in favor of Mac OS X. err.. no, take that back. That would just then bring all of the idiots that write the exploits over to PPC. Destra Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 I don't know about viruses but you can definitely get spyware, which if you have high speed can seem like a virus as it constantly uses your connection. If there is one thing you should have on your computer it is Anti-Virus software and run Ad-aware to get rid of spyware. You should also never have to reformat as you can easily just reinstall windows into a new directory and then run an Anti-Virus scan or the free on line one from Trend Micro. You could reformat but it is just much more painful.
cdi-buy.com Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 Does anyone know how to create a partition on the fly? I have 160 GB and I'd like to split it off into another drive so I can save my important stuff there as a backup.
♥ecartz Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 Does anyone know how to create a partition on the fly? I have 160 GB and I'd like to split it off into another drive so I can save my important stuff there as a backup. You need a partition resizer (you can't create a new partition out of an existing partition, so you make the existing partition smaller and use the new free space for the new partition). Various Linux distros offer FAT resizers for free (Knoppix comes to mind). I think that the latest Mandrake has an NTFS resizer. Plus of course, you can always buy one from someone like Norton. Once you have the free space, you can use a regular partition maker. These usually have names like fdisk. If you run a Windows XP Pro install CD, it will offer you the opportunity to make partitions from the free space. You just need to remember not to overwrite one of your existing partitions when you do it. Hth, Matt Always back up before making changes.
cdi-buy.com Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 I use Windows XP, and don't have any original XP Installation CDs. I just need to know how to separate some of the 160 GB I have, 135 of which are still free.

dreamscape Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 for resizing, moving, creating, etc partitions on the fly in windows systems, I use Partition Magic Pro. Some people are wary of doing things like this on the fly, but I have never once encountered any sort of trouble with using Partition Magic. That said, the version I have was made by PowerQuest. I see in December Symantec bought out PowerQuest and their product line, so I do not speak for the newer Norton Partition Magic. Destra Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 Partition Magic will definitely make partitions for you quickly and Mandrake?s install does have partitioning function built in. I have never personally used it for just partitioning, I guess you make your partition and quit the install, but it does work for making a Linux partition when installing Mandrake. If you are making a partition to save backup data it won?t help in a hardware failure, same physical drive.
