osCommerce

The e-commerce.

Installation on own pc

Hi all of you!!

I'm new to OsCommerce and would like to test it by installing it on my pc to setup a shop "offline", before deciding to get a host with mysql. <_<

How do I install it and what else do I need?

What would you recommend?

I already have a shop (www.littletreasures.de) and would like to make it more professional. OsCommerce seems to be the no.1 choice, it just seems to be quite complicated in installing.

The e-commerce software I'm using lets me build the shop complete offline and I can check if everything works before putting it online. Is this also possible with OsCommerce?

If these topics have been discussed before, which I believe, and you don't want to go through it all again, just tell me where to find the answers.. ;)

Hope you can help...... :D

Philip

osC is actually extremely easy to setup as is just about any PHP-based script site (imho). The customization is where it can get complicated. ;)

Anyway, that said ... sure you can set it up on your own PC. Win 2K, XP and .NET should all be able to handle that as well as Linux. Not sure what you need for Linux. I did it a few months back on Win 2K Proand recall downloading lots of little bits and pieces from M$ to setup IIS and SQL. That's where I would recommend starting. :)

iam lazy, I used apache triade which has mysql, php, apache and other stuff, pre configured just add osc to htdoc directory and, point your apache conf to the catalog directory. As of live or not, you would need a domain name to setup shop, just don't give it out until you are ready to go live. Also create database before running the install, use mysql control center. I started with a free domain at no-ip.com.

unzip osc to apache2/hdocs directory and setup your apache conf file to point to the apache2/hdocs/oscommerce/catalog directory. Don't point direct to install, just browse to it. Make sure you create database before running install.

Actually, if you're using EasyPHP, just copy the files to your www directory (after extracting them). For myself, I followed EasyPHP's suggestion and put it in c:\Program Files and then created an osc directory under www (so my path for copying files is c:\Program Files\EasyPHP\www\osc and after creating the database, browse to \\localhost\osc\catalog\install.php (double check the part after osc) and was able to successfully run the install.

I originally didn't get it working right becasue I was trying to open the install.php file directly. After I figured out my goof, I was all set. Read the documentation a couple of times and try to follw the logic of it and it will come together.
