Hi. I get the following error when trying to install:

Install OS Commerce (2/3)

The installation can not be completed:

- You cannot install more than one script in the root directory of a domain.

Click on the browser's Back button to fix reported errors.

The problem is, I cant find any script in the directory. Any ideas? I am new and do not understand this very well.

I am new too, but it sounds like a server issue to me. You might check with the hosting company, let them know you are trying to install OSCommerce, make sure you are installing where you should be... maybe they have something set where you can't.

Is it relevant that my server provider uses fantastico to auto install? That is the method I am using to install.

Use that link that I gave you, install it as they show. If you have free access to the root directory, remove what anything that "attempted" to install so that you have a clean start. Then do it as that link shows you. I did just fine untill I needed to change permission levels, lol.... so if you figure that one out, respond to my post :D

I got mine to work. Delete all the folders that were created when you tried to initially install, so you can start with a fresh install. You will probably need to close out the install and start from scratch. Did you check out that link I gave you?

No folders were created when I initially installed, as the install is done direct from my cpanel.....I am so confused!!!

I recognise that this is a very old thread, but since I had the same error and managed to fix it, I thought I'd offer up what happened to me for the sake of someone searching.

I installed osCommerce via Fantastico, played around, decided to start fresh. Fantastico did not want to remove it for me, I had to do it manually. You have to uninstall both the files and the database. Then, when I went to reinstall osCommerce (again with Fantastico) I received a "You cannot install more than one script in the root directory of a domain" message. GrowlBooHiss. I ended up being able to get it to install by going to the very main directory, and opening up the .fantasticodata folder. In there, I deleted the installed_in_root.php file.

I had to delete the index.php file and the images folders as well - fantastico doesnt like to try to overwrite directories or files if they are already there.

Anyways, it worked! hope this helps someone =)
