SSL vendor questions

I have a couple options I can go with. My host can provide me with a shared certificate this is good because there is no cost involved. Bad because the url changes to https://mydomain.theredomain.com and it may or may not cause some concern for clients at the site. I could purchase a certificate. There a bunch of vendors out there with a wide range of products. Do I gain much spending hundreds? Godaddy is selling them for $49 as are others. I can't find out much about godaddy though if it is a trusted root or chained server. What are you doing? The site has yet to make a dime so cost is a concern. Security and insurance of it cannot be over looked though.

go read about SSL here, for my 2 cents worth, use the shared certificate until you prove the site is making money. then, if it is worth the price, purchase your own ssl, remember that you will need to pay that annually. and you may need to get your own dedicated server when you do so.

check with the godaddy ssl limitations, as i have heard some negative about their certs here, dont remember exactly what, but a search will find them.

so, a tutorial on what ssl is, etc . . .
