Zones

Do I have to make a zone for every state or country I want to be able to purchase from my site?

I currently only make one for Pennsylvania, in order to be able to include the Pennsylvania tax zone and rate. However, if anyone tries to create a new account...it forces them to choose from a drop down menu (and pennsylvania is the only one available). So, am I assuming correctly that I have to make zones for every state if I plan on selling throughout the U.S.?

please, no bumping allowed, it is against forum rules.

now for the other states, no you do not have to create zones, the only one you needed to create the tax zone for was Pennsylvania, you do not tax the other purchases going to other states. did you remove all the states from the database?

Sorry, my thread was silent for over a month and I thought it was easier than creating a duplicate one. I do know though that people often overuse "bumping" and must have confused myself with the rules as I frequent a bunch of forums.

My original oscommerce didn't have any database of states, only countries. Thus, as stated, when I make Pennsylvania a Tax Zone, people can only choose that state when registering. Should I add all the states as similar zones and just not apply a tax class to them? Am I missing something in the software (database, etc.)?

Thanks for replying thus far John, any further help would be great (from anyone)

I won't bump anyone, but I have the exact same question you do Hoops, excepting of course that my one and only zone is Texas.

So I suppose now I can patiently await an answer with you.

Tick, tock.

I am by no means an expert but I believe there are two types of zones. The "Tax Rate" which you setup for your individual states tax, and the "Zone" which produces the drop down box for registration and is pulled from when setting up a Tax Rate.

Did that help you Aidant, my brother in confusion? :D

I think it provided me with some insight, thanks cj. I was aware of the difference between the Tax Rate and Zones. And, I am now assuming that I have to add every state as a zone in order to have them available for registration. I assume that I also have to add every country or province in the same place to if I plan on shipping outside the U.S. It's fairly confusing, as the software comes with no zones, and up to the point where you add a particular state tax, anyone can register from anywhere.

50+ Zones eh.......time to get to work ;)
