salewit Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 I'm going to be starting my cart soon, and like everyone else, I want to make sure my items are properly picked up by the search engines. I did a search here of Google and "search engines" and got an overwhelming number of threads. I spent more than an hour going through them and I'm still confused. Does anyone know of one or two places that may explain what needs to be done regarding search engines and OSCommerce? Thanks Sam
perpetual-burn Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 1) use the header tags controller contribution, can be found in the contribs area. 2) In the admin section of you osc panel put force cookies to true and prevent spider sessions to true Doing that my site alerady has 30+ pages listed in less than a month and google re visits often :) Also, have the basic meta tags in your index.php file between the head tags. You know the meta name and description, etc..
salewit Posted May 21, 2004 Author Posted May 21, 2004 Wow, that simple? I must have waded through 50 threads on this subject. I'll give it a try. Thanks so much!

Look on these boards for SEO or search engine optimization. The Ideas perpetual-burn gave you need to be done, but there is a lot on info out on the web or other places for this info. I was going to start writing stuff but then I thought... just look on the boards, I've been researching SEO for a couple months, and I have heaps to learn, I've only hit the tip of the berg. Do the search on these forums and you'll see what I mean.... There are some great SEO guys here.... 9 times out of 10 its a PEBCAK Error (Problem exists between chair and keyboard) Replace that and you're fine...
salewit Posted May 27, 2004 Author Posted May 27, 2004 Follow-up question to all this. How critical is it to this whole SEO stuff to set the "Force Cookies True"? Reason being, is when I do that, the thing loses track of things. For example, I go to enter a review, it asks me to logon then dumps me back on the home page. I try again and the whole process repeats itself. No problems otherwise. Thanks Sam

Thanks Sam Its not, I don't use cookies at all, and I have about 212, but Google just did a deep crawl two days ago, over 450 pages... Just as long as you prevent spider sessions, you should be good. I wouldn't say critical at all. Seems like you have cookie problems... 9 times out of 10 its a PEBCAK Error (Problem exists between chair and keyboard) Replace that and you're fine...
atlantis Posted June 8, 2004 Posted June 8, 2004 im using header tag controller, however after six months only my index page is indexed and this is html any ideas anyone
agiftcodotcom Posted June 8, 2004 Posted June 8, 2004 ** Note to self about not needing cookies *** Try the following link. Expecially the two fields just ABOVE step 8. "Keyword Density Analyzer" & "Server Page Tool" Those are REALLY good for helping out with keywords and things of that nature. Contributions I used : Updated 06-13-04 23:42 ---------------- Vote on My Graphis Poll
agiftcodotcom Posted June 8, 2004 Posted June 8, 2004 *** Cancel note to self *** I thought it would fix THIS problem, but no such luck :( . Contributions I used : Updated 06-13-04 23:42 ---------------- Vote on My Graphis Poll

nrlatsha Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 yes the page is www.zeppelinhc.com any info would be handy I don't see any meta tag info or title on any of your pages past the index page (which has some errors on it) You'll need titles and meta tags on all of those... I have a feeling you'll need to look over the install for header tags controller again... Take a look at my site www.nabcomdiamonds.com and view source to see what I mean. 9 times out of 10 its a PEBCAK Error (Problem exists between chair and keyboard) Replace that and you're fine...
