The paypal IPN contrib allows the order to be placed into the database and order finalized once your server receives notificaiton from paypal. The one that came with OSC relies on users to press the continue button after they pay at the paypal site. If they don't hit continue, the order doesn't get added to the database. Then you get an email from paypal saying someone bought something, but you have no idea what it is. Then you have to call the customer, to ask what they ordered, that sucks. There's probably a whole lot more to it, but that is the quick and easy version of why its better. I figured, "It just is" isn't a good enough explanation....
