Shared SSL on a shared network setup

The website is for a charity. We got a very cheap deal (we thought). We have got SSL thrown in but the problem arrises that as my webhost put it "shared SSL is available on the shared network" - I take it that they have one certificate for a network of servers. The certificate is on a different machine.

Thus they advise me that "If your scripts are setting cookies whether by SSL or non-SSL, you should only provide access to the scripts via a single url i.e. either secure or non-secure. I would advise consulting your script documentation to ensure a successful usage of the relevant script."

So I thought I could change the configure.php file so both were HTTPS. Wrong I lost the website and spent lots of hours on it.

Can anybody help?

If not can anyone suggest a cheap webhost with SSL that will support oscommerce?

Try setting up your configure.php similar to this

  define('HTTP_SERVER', 'http://yourdomain'); // eg, http://localhost - should not be empty for productive servers
 define('HTTPS_SERVER', 'https://theSecureServerProvidedByYourHostingCompany'); // eg, https://localhost - should not be empty for productive servers
 define('ENABLE_SSL', true); // secure webserver for checkout procedure?
 define('HTTP_COOKIE_DOMAIN', 'yourdomain');
 define('HTTPS_COOKIE_DOMAIN', 'theSecureServerProvidedByYourHostingCompany');

This does not fix the problem even if I set SSL to "true". The network of servers is set up so cookies can only be set either entirely by SSL or entirely without SSL.

Thanks anyway.
