Do you think putting this in at the top would work at all?

Eric - the first thing you need to do is make your page titles unique. The easiest way to do this is by installing the Header Tags Controller contribution. The title is one of the first things the SE's look at and yours, for the shop, have OSCommerce as a title. Even your main page has Nature Suds Online Store. This isn't a good title. You want to use your keyword or phrase in the title. Do you know what word(s) you are trying to target?

Overture shows only 114 searches for the first one last month. The second had 48612. Obviously, you would prefer to be at the top of the list for the second term but it is harder, though not impossible, to do. Once you decide on the term, place it in your title and at the begining of your meta tag for keywords. You will also ned to include it as much as possible in the text on your home page.

Know what is weird, i started to read this assuming my PR would be 0 since i dont link no one and no one links me. So i downloaded the google toolbar, went to my site and surprise surprise my PR is 3, when i goto the catalog page my PR is 2 but what i did notice if i use http://catalog.streetflossin.com my page rank is 0, but this way http://www.streetflossin.com/catalog/ its 2. Kinda interesting in knowing that. But anyways why in the world is my PR so high considering i dont link no one (not that im complaining, i want to make it even higher now). The only thing i do is every forum i talk on i always make my name streetflossin, think that has something to do with it?

Your PR is based on incoming links (these forum links count for that.)

"You will also ned to include it as much as possible in the text on your home page."

No. You don't want to over use the keywords in your onsite copy.

"See, I dont even know if google has my site indexed... is there a way to see?"

Run a search in google for: site:www.yourdomain.com

Other searches for Search Optimization purposes are:

link:www.yourdomain.com <<< shows found sites linking yours

allinanchor:your keyword <<< shows sites leading in anchor text

Installing HTC was a good decision, IMO, but you didn't go far enough. It's main purpose is to provide a unique title for each page yet your shop pages have the same title and, even worse, they start with OSCommerce. Very bad for improving your serach results.

To see if your site's ranking has improved, use one of the many tools available on the net to find your position. I have added several to a contribution called SEO Assistant. It makes it handy to have them at your fingertips in your shop but all of them are available somewhere on the net.

To see if your site is indexed, type the following in the google search bar:

allinurl:www.naturesudsonline.com.

I ran your site through all of the tools in SEO Assistant and found that www.streetflossin.com/ has a PR of 3. Since www.streetflossin.com/catalog/ is linked off of that, you would receive a PR of 2. You have over 1000 links to your site from the major SE's. Probably the reason you are not seeing a PR for http://catalog.streetflossin.com is because it is a redirect, which SE's don't typically like.

  • 1 month later...

After reading comments on adding a site description at the top of your web pages in with <h1 /h1> around it, I tried to think of the most effecient way to do this.

So since I already have the Meta Tags contribution installed, I thought at first I could simplay put this inside the meta_tags.php file:

<h1 class="hidden"><?php echo $meta_description; ?></h1>

But it doesn't seem to work there. I get a parse error, probably because it is above the <body> tag? So instead I moved the line into .../includes/header.php, just after the first <table> tag. And it seems to work there.

So this means for every page that loads, I'll automatically have the unique Description created by Meta Tags contrib, for the page being shown, displayed (but hidden) at the top of each page.

Is this the best way to do this?

PS: The only thing I don't like is even though it's hidden, there's a 1/4 inch blank space at the top of my page now. :(

The H1 tags surrounds the header of your page, not your meta tags. Each page usually has its heading displayed with

<td><?php echo HEADING_TITLE; ?></td>

You can change it to

<td><h1><?php echo HEADING_TITLE; ?></h1></td>

or you can add a H1 class.

Right, you don't put them around the meta tags.

My point was, I'm using the Meta Tags contribution which creates an auto description for each page you are on, and what I am doing is using THAT automatically created description as the one I display in the hidden H1 statement at the top of each page.

I do this in header.php. So I was wondering if anyone else has done it this way? Header.php displays the hidden description right at the top of every page, just after the starting <body> tag.

Jack,

You seem to know a lot about keywords and using Overture to figure out the correct keywords and phrases to use for a particular site. Can you give more information on how to get Overture to display the best keywords and the phrases/keywords that most people use to find things? There isn't any option on their site that I can see for doing this.

Thanks in advance.. :)

AFAIK, it doesn't have such an option (unless it exists with their paid service). What you need to do is come up with a word or phase to start with and plug that into their search string. You will get the repsonse of how many searches were done and also a list of other searches that were done on variations of that word(s). For example, if you type in Coffee as the keyword, it returns over 251,000 searches. Then it lists "Coffee Maker," "Coffee Shop," Break Coffee," and so on. If you were in the business of making coffee then you would choose "Coffee Maker" and enter that into the search string. It then gives you the most searched for term under that phase. You would keep this up until you found a phase that makes sense for your site and has a good number of searches on it. There are sites around that say they will find your best keyword or phase, usually for a fee. I haven't used these so I don't know how well they work. Search google for SEO keyword and you should get a lot of matches. The bottom line is you know your business better than someone else, so you should be better able to determine the keyword. Just be sure to check how many searches are done on it to ensure at least someone is looking for it.

Probably a dumb question but search engines don't like keywords repeated over and over correct? So if you use multiple phrases, i.e. pc computer hardware, computer store, would they see computer as being used twice or are they their own separate entity?

There is a fine line at times between good SEO and spamming. If you over use a word or phase, the SE's may see it as spamming. Supoosedly, the SE's are smart enough to tell if you are using the words for the benefit of your site.

But all this aside, keep in mind that the purpose of the keyword is to improve the ranking of your page. One of the ways SE's determine this is by the keyword density. By including a number of keywords in the meta tags, you are most likely hurting yourself since it will lower your KD. If you want to attract people based on different keywords, you need to move those words to different pages. You should have only a few keywords in your meta tag and, then, only if they are used throughout the page.

So in a case like HTC, where you can insert default meta tags to be used on all pages, just add a few for that and then concentrate on the tags per product page?

For instance, in a case of selling computer hardware, don't add video cards as a default, only add it the the video card pages themselves correct?

That's correct. The meta tags should be used to describe what is on that page. If you sell computers and you have printers in the meta tags for all of your pages, then you are defeating the purpose (unless you sell printers on every page).
