Automatic generate UPC/SKU Number?

Well what EXACTLY are you trying to do?

UPC and SKU are technically different things.

A UPC is controlled by the international body called the "Uniform Code Council", they assigns the Manufacturer number (the first 6 digits of a UPC), the last 6 digits are controled by the manufacturer.

A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is just an internal UNIT assigned to a product. Therefore a UPC is a SKU but a SKU may not always be a UPC, it could be a part number, a product code, a model number, etc.

I suppose from your explanation, what my client is looking for is an automatic SKU number generator. I explained to him that he could easily develop his own system and add it to products via the prodect model but he would much rather have them automatically generated.

All this and the store is already done!

I don't know what to do.

Well he can use EXCEL to do this then, I mean just setup up a number template and drag it down for it to replicate the cells and it will auto increment.

What I am trying to get at is autogen'ing SKU numbers is a complicated matter, not in the software, but in the requirements of the company. A SKU number can be all numbers, or alpha numeric, and it can contain special characters such as hyphens, etc.

Unless they are creating their unique products, everything should already have a SKU of sometype on it.

I am assuming that since you are posting here you client is using OSC, and they want an easy way to fill in the "Products Model" field required to be unique for each product. Plus once they make it they are usually stuck with it.

If that is the case, there is no contribution I have see yet that would autogen this field. However, as I stated, if they are reselling items that they have not created, they should already have a SKU number that can be used for the Products Model. Also if they sell items that are from lots of different sources, they can add prefixes and suffixes to that sku number to make it more unique. What I do is just take the first letter of each word of the companies name, or the common abbrevation for the company and place that before the SKU number. This make it very difficult to acidently duplicate this number, and it also allows me to identify where the item comes from just from the Products Model.

Without knowing more about WHY your client THINKS they need this I can't offer much more help. Other than, if you haven't looked at the EasyPopulate 2.72 contrib you should it allows you to upload a CSV file that you create with a spread sheet therefore dealing with the Products Model field should be much easier.

You can get EasyPopulate 2.72 by clicking on the link.

I hope this helps...

Hi Aalst, thanks for your reply. I already have easypopulate contributiion installed and I made my client aware that they can easily add model numbers to each of their products via Excell.

They do not seem satisfied with that option, however, and prefer to have the SKUs automatically generated by "the computer." Their concern is that they have a lot of unique items (overstock clothing) and don't want to add a unique model number to EVERY item. (It would be a lot of work, considering they would like to upload 1000+ items)

They also want them to be generated using a prefix that includes part of the category name (ie TS_321 for an item in the tshirts category). I told them that I would look into it and get back to them. As of now, I don't know where to start. I've almost have it with this project :(
