Header Navigation colour help

I've recently installed oscommerce. I want to change the Header navigation bar to black, with the text white, simple, right? Well, when I do it in stylesheet.css, the >> and | in the categories and the account section change too! I can't figure out why the >> and | should change to the background colour too!!!!!! Any ideas?
