osiris7719 Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Hi all, I just downloaded a copy of oscommerce today, and I found 100s of php files in the zip  Since I don't know any php, I was wondering how hard it would be to use oscommerce because it's the most fully featured (and free) shopping cart solution that I've found on the net. zzfritz Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Don't be intimidated by the size and complexity of osCommerce, that is mainly the result of its being so modularized to accommodate multiple languages, currencies, platforms and to be extensible. It is possible for someone knowing no PHP at all to get an osCommerce site up and running, and for help there is no better resource than this forum.
Guest Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Well, a couple of months ago, I installed osCommerce with NO knowlege of php. And now, two moths later, I'm really getting the hang of it. Basically, what I'm saying is this.... With all those files, it all looks daunting at first, but in a very short while you will get acustomed to it. :) There's a lot of tips on how to use the software in various sections of this suport site...and if you trawl through these support forums and read a lot of posts, you'll pick up a lot of knowlege too. Once you've got the hang of it, you'll never look back. ;) If you ant to see what I've accheived with MY site in a matter of weeks, click on my site link below. :)
♥yesudo Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Don't listen to Mike - he's only been at it a couple of months and he's already lost half his head...... :o Only joking - agree with above and I will PM you a useful guide - which will give you an idea how all the files link together. Your online success is Paramount.
osiris7719 Posted April 22, 2004 Author Posted April 22, 2004 thanks guys... :D I expected you all to say no mate you have to be a PHP guru to use this! lol Osiris -----------
Levi Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Hey guys im new to this too as well :) I have no PHP knowledge and would really love a guide or something to help me put up a demo store. Any help will really be appreciated! Thanks all.
osiris7719 Posted April 22, 2004 Author Posted April 22, 2004 so umm...how do I start?? Osiris -----------
Levi Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 I found a useful link to get started. See if this interests you. http://wiki.oscommerce.com/docsInstall I am in the midst of trying to install it at the moment. Let me know if it works for you. :)
Guest Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Yep...that's a good place to start. (I was just about to suggest that) Anyway... I don't mind being a "guide". I'm not quite a guru, but I've spent a LOT of time reworking my site over the past few weeks to turn it totally php based.
osiris7719 Posted April 22, 2004 Author Posted April 22, 2004 ok I'll just say it: I'm scared of starting the installation and then something happens and I don't finish it, then how do I put everything back the way it was before! :o Osiris -----------
Guest Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Well, if something DID go wrong , all you'd have to do is delete the files and the osCommerce database. There will be times when you do make little mistakes and get php errors.... (I've mucked things up before) ...but the good thing is...there are plenty of instruction pages here...plus there's usually someone here on these forums who can help.
osiris7719 Posted April 23, 2004 Author Posted April 23, 2004 I know I'm jumping way ahead with this question: am I right in thinking if you want to add a product to the catalogue you just add a new record the database? (have done some databases before). Osiris -----------
Guest Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 No, you add a product in your store Admin. (uploading picture, adding text descriptions, price, etc) It is automatically added to the database. Have you been to your Admin area yet?
