MelC Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 am trying to generate a discussion of what will happen now i've switched to OSC and am hoping this will not turn into an "how to optimize osc for seo" as there is plenty of info out there on that already - i've been reading it for the past few days :) (all credit to burt, wizard, and others - fantastic info guys.) what i'm primarily looking for is what people would expect to happen in the following scenario (hence posting this in chat and not support)... static Html/Java script based site with reasonably good rankings on google (root index page was a 5) turns over night into dynamic php site using OSC. my google ranking for the root of my site is still showing as 5. I'm assuming that this is because the bot hasn't visited this month. The old site had a splash screen which was fully optimised and valid html 4. i've been working on my dev site to get index.php to valid standards as well and have just about cracked it, so will soon be porting that over to the main site. just have to work out where in index php i can put the w3c logo so it only shows up in the root. so then the discussion begins here - what can I expect to happen to that hard won 5 ranking when googlebot comes back? looking forward to reading what you have to say, take care all, Mel
wizardsandwars Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Well, the first thing that will probably happen is that your PR will drop to 0, probably for several days, or even weeks. Anytime that Google sees a MAJOR change in content, you'll see PR drop to 0 for a short period. What happens next will depend on your significant backlinks. If you still have 100 or so quality backlinks, meaning people that are still linking to your new stie, then you should regain your PR ranking. If all of the backlinks are now broken, then you will stay at a PR0 until you get them updated, or get new ones. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.
♥yesudo Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 sometimes when i make changes to yesUdo I see the google PR change straight away - is this correct ? Your online success is Paramount.
wizardsandwars Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 No, you won't see changes in your PR until Google updates it's backlinks database. There was a very long period of time last year that Google did not do this at all, so essentially, everyone's PR was frozen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. paulm2003 Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 I created one link form each of my indexed/ranked old pages to some of the new osC page(s) + a clear message for the costumers that they were watching an outdated page. And after I saw google indexed the new pages I removed the old ones. It worked fine for me, don't know if it is wise to do in general.

Will double check with all my suppliers and make sure they have the links correct, but they should be as the site entry location hasn't actually changed. take care, Mel
