Adding images within categories

I am hoping that somebody can help me....

 

I would like to know how to display each items image next to it's name/title when a category is entered/chosen. At present I only have a list of names which isn't too pleasing to the eye & makes browsing products more difficult than it needs to be.

 

Each item has an image within it's description but it is only visable when the actual item is veiwed.

Any help would be great, I'm a bit of a novice at all this
