Subcategories not showing when products exist

I have a category, and in that category I have products, AND subcategories. When I click on the link in the left column to view the category, all I see is the products - not the subcategories.

 

Shouldn't I see both the subcategories (listed at the top of the page) and the products for that category listed below?

 

Someone please let me know if this is even possible, because I am going nuts trying to figure out why this isn't working.
