cgchris99 Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 Well, it finally happened. I had my first chargeback. The worst part is it's not a valid chargeback. The guys wife didn't ask him if the charge was valid. So not only does she dispute, but does so in writing. So the charge gets reversed and I get dinged $15.00 for the chargeback. Now I am trying to get it straightened out with the merchant services. I have to send the guy a letter asking him to sign & date it stating the charge is valid. I'll be lucky if he does. Then merchant services says, if you have signed delivery then I can get it reversed. I sent it by UPS but without Signed Delivery confirmation. Does everyone ship with signed delivery confirmation? Anyone know what the additonal cost? Does it make your customers made when they have to deal with signing? Thanks for any advice
Guest Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 Most courier services usuallly would ask for signing, most companies who ship with these couriers request that customer signs the UPS paper when delivered. I always doing so, as you got what you got when you did not do so.
jdfitch Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 The charge for UPS Signature Confirmation is about $2.00. Well woth it if you ever lost a charge back dispute because of a delivery confirmation. I had one back in January, $125.00 He got to keep the product because I could not prove he ever got it. UPS showed it as delivered...Oh well I learned. When you process your UPS shipments (if you do it through the UPS website) The last step Just before you hit the ship now button is a review shipment button. click it and look for the edit shipping options. Look down the right side for a drop down box with delivery confirmation options. Set it to delivery confirmation or to signature required. which ever you feel comfortable. I only use it when I do not know the customer. Go into to admin panel of OSC go to modules->shipping->ups and set a handleing fee that will cover the added expense. Beats losing chargeback disputes to dishonest people. UPS will send you a paper copy of the signature capture in the mail. Good luck If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice, I will choose a purpose clear, I will choose Free Will. --Neal Peart - Rush
cgchris99 Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 I'm just worried I will loose a lot of customers if they have to accept the "returns policy" and they have to sign for UPS for every shipment. It has been stated over and over that the easier the checkout, and the less steps, the more sales you get. So if I do this, will the additional chargeback protection offset the reduced sales? Also, is there anyway to get paid for this? Is it worth it to mail him an invoice? Turn it over to a collection agency?
safoo Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 The thing to realize is that banks will do whatever they want. Even if you have all signatures and proof that shows you did everything correctly they may not reverse a chargeback. With that said, I don't think its necessary to use the signature confirmation for every package. It's a hassle for customers and costs more for you. The main thing to be aware of is shipping to non-billing (or non-verified in paypal) addresses. If you ship to the valid billing address and you have a tracking number that shows the package was delivered, you should not have any problem getting the chargeback reversed. However, the 10 or 15 dollar processing fee will never be reversed. One thing you may want to check with your credit card processor is what is showing up on the customer's bills. Is it your name or company name or website name etc.
