ssl is very imp if u r doing online transaction. actually its a encrypted layer so when someone click submits, it is ecrypted into some zeros and ones. so no hacker can steal that info(specially cc no.s) now u can get ssl certificates they are programs that will convert ur secure files into encrypted so no one else can read.

they r priced 2 much. 900$ a year...i found a site...its www.freessl.com

they r 40 bucks a year...i am using geotrust thats 200 a year. i guess 40 dollars will do the same work. hope it helps...

Does this mean all i then need to do is have the program that comes with commerce on and when i go online i can retrieve the CC numbers and punch them into my terminal on the desk? and it will make is safer?

SSL (secure sockets layers) is technology that allows to encrypt information sent over the Internet.

When customers send sensitive information like credit card numbers to your site, you want to make sure that no one intercepts it before reaching you. Thats where SSL comes in.

Inorder to use SSL, you need an SSL certificate which is quite inexpensive these days. I got mines for $49 from InstantSSL.com (GeoTrust). Its not a program, rather an online identity that you accquire for a specific period which allows you to use SSL on your site.

SSL is free.

The certificates (you can actually make one yourself) cost money however.

You can encrypt your connection without paying but certificates guarantee that you're encrypted (via SSL) communication is going to who you think it's going to.

No MATTER WHAT I'd go SSL if I'd be doing credit cards. Even if you don't buy a certificate. (which I wouldn't recommend since certs add trust to your site and you can get them so cheap) SSL != Certificate. They are seperate (but commonly used together)

(You can actually use a certificate to secure email.)

At any rate, many ISPs are required to maintain data logs for so many years. That's not good. That means the credit cards are stored on file on different servers in between the customer and you. (At best, not good, at worst a fine or imprisonment - negligence is illegal)

James,

You can also get SSL through a shared certificate your host may provide, depending on the host you are using.

This would mean that instead of having your site be:

https://yoursite.com (as it would be say you purchased a certificate)

it would be something like:

https://host143.yourhost.com/~yourdomainname/yourfile

Just wondering - i set my site up using this type of ssl, but when ssl is active, none of the images will load. How do you tell oscommerce where to load pics from when ssl is active?

Start your own thread. Do not hijack other threads.

I apologise - i didn't intend to hijack the thread, - it appeared the subject was leading towards mine.

I have started a thread with this problem at least three times with not even a reply...

Yes. You should use a host that offers Shared SSL to start out. It is the best way to go when you do not even know if your site is going to make you money to being with and it is easier to start out this way.

Later, if you are making money, I would buy one of those 49 dollar certificated if your ISP will issue you your own IP address. If you are going to buy your own SSL certificate, then you need to have your own IP address for your site.

So for right now, if I were you, I would find a host that...

1. Offers Shared SSL (when looking at a host, just search the hosting plan for "Shared SSL").

and

2. Will allow you to buy a dedicated IP address should you decide to buy your own certificate someday. (A dedicated IP normally costs 1.50 -3.00 per month depending on the host). Some hosts will not sell you any dedicated IPs as they are strictly set up for shared hosting but most will.

You only use ssl normally for your sign-up, login, and shopping basket/checkout. If you have your http path also set to https then this may be the source of your problem - especially if you're using a shared ssl. Hope this helps - Vger
