Hi everyone. My name is Tom and I have a windows 98 system and Dreaweaver 4. I purchased an oscommerce site for my wifes store but I can't seem to edit or see any of the php files in dreamweaver. I downloaded a package for apache, mysql, and php but can't seem to get the all to play together any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

Very vague, I use Dreamweaver MX I use an ftp client to download the files from my site to my computer, edit them in dreamweaver and upload them again.

I assume that what you mean is you can only see code, not the look of the page.

You can edit in Dreamweaver, but you will probably need to become a little familiar with php - and you will only know if it all works when you upload and try it out, unless you use easyphp (which provides a local environment for you to try these things out).

Luckily there are some extremely helpful people here who can provide code/script feedback, or even - if you copy the code from a particular file that is giving you problems - will give you the correct code.

You can also edit the CSS stylesheet in Dreamweaver - this will enable you to give osCommerce the look that you want. You will specify font colour, background, boxes, etc.

The file header.php will contain the header information.

And so on.

I hope that helps.

Hi

I wouldn't edit the PHP in dreamweavers graphic interface. Basically it does not give you an acurate representation of the page layout and also, php code is represented by a yellow php code tag. I myself use dreamweaver instead of hand coding and have little knowledeg of coding except basic html. The help on these forums will give you everything you need to edit the php files in text form. Try FTP leech to upload as well as you can change permissions on folders.

Hi folks,

I have just started using OS Commerce. I have DW MX 2004 and I pressume from reading above that I will only be able to view the code and not the design. Also when I try to preview the page in DW it does not display anything, why does it do this?? If so how can I preview the page in DW.

Thanks in advance

Mark :)

you could save as an html file or get easyphp and set it up on your local machine this has php apache mysql phpMyAdmin all in one package available here Click

It depends what page you are working on. Both the index files preview in dreamweaver, but it will look like jibberish at the top leading to a basic form with most of the image links broken. I preview eveything I have done in dreamweaver by uploading directly to the host and then checking it out live. The php files rely on the SQL database for information. This is one of the reasons you can't preveiw in dreamweaver. Upload OScommerce to your host server, run the intstall app, put in a under construction html index page up and put and get files to preview stuff. The other option is to set up a local test server but that wasn't an option for me. I will say however that I have not been using OS commerce ( or php) that long but have experienced no problems doing things this way. Also, edit everything in the text editor! Its easier!

Thanks Toby and 241.

Toby, I have uploaded OS onto my server and have run the installation. I want to change the heading at the top of the index page. What is the best way to go about this as I cannot view the design in Dreamweaver. I cannot see where the picture in the code. I cannot preview the index page either.

Help much appreciated here.

BTW where do I get text editor from??

Hi

Open up the index.php file in dreamweaver and look at it in text veiw (click on the <> symbol at the top of the page.

Find this line of code:

<td height="50"><?php echo tep_image(DIR_WS_IMAGES . 'oscommerce.gif', 'osCommerce', '300', '50'); ?></td>

You can go about this 1 of two ways

Edit the graphic found in the adm/images folder to resemble the look you are after or

create a new graphic to a defined pixal style. Upload this to the image folder and change the code above to the folowing. (lets say the the image is 500 x50 pixals and we call it yourimage.gif)

<td height="50"><?php echo tep_image(DIR_WS_IMAGES . 'yourimage.gif', 'yourimage', '500', '50'); ?></td>

Remember, if you want to increase the height you need to change the table height as well.

This sholud change the image at the top of the page. I think you can also use a flash file.

Hope that helps.

Thought I should just mention that this will just change the admin section.

You need to edit the catalog/includes/header.php file to change the shop side.

This is the actual code from the index.php file. I cannot find that bit of code anywhere. Does below look familiar??

I may have missed it, can you see it? (Sorry to be a pain!!) :(

Hi

What version of OScommerce do you have?

This looks like the configure.php file from the includes folder?

You can download the newest version from oscomerce.com.

Mark  :(

The OSCommerce cart works differently than a normal HTML site.

Similar to a 'Frames' site, the index page is comprised of many different things- a header , footer, left middle and right side.. and all the blocks are defined within it's own properties- not all listed on one page like you would see an HTML index.

The cart is customizeable,you just have to learn about where the files are and how to manipulate them by searching through this forum for your answered questions, reading the WIKI files that tell you how to alter your site, and ultimately, asking the pros in here when you cant find your answer any other way.

There are people who will customize and set up your cart for you, but most I have seen charge anywhere from $100-200 to do it.

As you asked for the best way to alter the site yourself, you need tofamiliarize yourself with some PHP and with what pages do what. It takes a little time, but it saves you money... unless time IS money to you. You can alter the code by viewing the pages in the code view (not design view) in Dreamweaver.

Either way, I recommend learning it- you get a great feeling of acheivement when you finally figuired it out. We might even pat you on the back, but dont get your hopes up too high *grin*

I have the latest version as I only downloaded last night. I have now opened up the header.php file and have succesfully imported the picture. For some reason I cannot preview the index page or header page in DW.

Also are these messages normal in DW for these files, its the error messages I am concerned about, although everything still seems to work OK:-

<?php

if (isset($HTTP_GET_VARS['error_message']) && tep_not_null($HTTP_GET_VARS['error_message'])) {

?>

<table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2">

<tr class="headerError">

<td class="headerError"><?php echo htmlspecialchars(urldecode($HTTP_GET_VARS['error_message'])); ?></td>

</tr>

Thanks very much toby for the help as I have got a lot further than where I was. :)

This is the actual code from the index.php file. I cannot find that bit of code anywhere. Does below look familiar??

I may have missed it, can you see it? (Sorry to be a pain!!) :(

I also wanted to mention Dreamweaver has this handly little tool called a "find & Replace"... should be under your edit menu.

I would use this to find a string of code in any of the pages in your local site but not replace it simply because if you screw up you have a lot more trouble fixing it unlill you know more about PHP.

*my 2 cents*

Hi Mark

Don't worry about that part of the code. If your site experiencese errors/ conflicts, this code brings up a red box at the top of the page Identifying where the problem is. Its one of the great things about oscommerce, it will tell you if somthing is wrong. For now though, its probably best if you follow Jyns advice and figure out which files do what. Check out the forums and refer to them everytime you have a problem and you will find things move very quickly.

I think Jyns hit the nail on the head here:

"Similar to a 'Frames' site, the index page is comprised of many different things- a header , footer, left middle and right side.. and all the blocks are defined within it's own properties- not all listed on one page like you would see an HTML index."

As I said earlier on, I find the best way to handle the preview of the site is by uploading and looking at it in place, or by setting up a local host, or by downloading a good php editing tool.

Thanks Jyn, that find and replace will certainly help things, thanks for all those tips. When I open the webite in my browser at the top it is displaying this message,

' Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /homepages/46/EDITED/htdocs/john/mark/4tops/catalog/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file.'

How can I configure this to get rid of that message?? :unsure:

Hi Mark

You need to change th CHmod of this file.

The way I change the permissions on my files/ directorys is through a program called leech ftp.

Find it on google, its free.

You can use this to access your files on the server.

When you connect to the server, your files will be brought up in the right hand column. Right click on the file you wish to change permissions on, click on change attributes and it will bring up a CHmod window. I think you change it to 644 but don't quote me.

Hi Toby, My settings are already on 644. On the owner settings it is set to read and write?

Anyone know what number I should set this to?? :unsure:
