Admin protection

If I simply ftp the folder admin to hard drive and change the folder name to something else and ftp it back?? will this mess anything else up or would it work.

It would mess things up - you would need to make changes in admin/includes/configure.php to reflect the name change - a different name is a good idea, but this should be coupled with restrictions on the directory through your webhosting control panel.

If you cant do that by your webserver controlpanel then? I need to know how to make .htaccess files and make em ask for user/pass

please help.
