charleyshipman Posted April 7, 2004 Posted April 7, 2004 I have ordered more bandwidth, and my site, AffordableBooksAndStuff.com is now back online. I submitted my products to Froogle a few days ago, and I guess they got around to looking at my site. I don't know enough to know what to do to fix this problem. Would some of you please look at my site and give me directions on what I can do to prevent this from happening again while still not angering Google or Froogle? Thanks in advance. CharleyShipman
charleyshipman Posted April 8, 2004 Author Posted April 8, 2004 It was 250MB now it is 500MB. I figured that all of my products, including images, is less than 10MB (650 * 15000 more or less). CharleyShipman
Mark Evans Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 If thats all the bandwidth you get I would look for another host :) A suggestion would be to look in your webserver logs and see where all the traffic is coming from. charleyshipman Posted April 8, 2004 Author Posted April 8, 2004 The limited bandwidth is a result of my refusal to spend very much money on this venture until it looks like it might work. What would you consider to be a reasonable bandwidth? Maybe I should spen more. I have tried to read the reports and they just as well be written in some foreign language. My most recent users are google bots that I think are downloading images for Froogle. What I don't understand is that my bandwidth usage went from very little to over 300MB in one day. Would you give me some idea as to how to read the reports? I have what I believe is a standard cpanel interface. Thanks CharleyShipman
HighHobbies.com Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 I looked at your site also, Personally i would not buy from your site.. Very disorganized, and there are error boxes all over the place. Good luck though.
wizardsandwars Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 The main problem is, you'll never be able to even hope to get ranked very well in search engines, because you just don't have enough bandwidth to be able to allow them to spider your site. Additionally, you might want to make sure that you aren't wasting bandwith by providing seach engines with a SID. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. charleyshipman Posted April 8, 2004 Author Posted April 8, 2004 I have 40 times that bandwidth (as in 10gigs) for $18.99/month (and it's a reseller account to boot so I can host as many of my domains on it as I want). Do you really think that's too much to spend? I'd say you're shortchanging yourself big time. I agree. How do I contact your hosting company? The main problem is, you'll never be able to even hope to get ranked very well in search engines, because you just don't have enough bandwidth to be able to allow them to spider your site. How much do I need? Additionally, you might want to make sure that you aren't wasting bandwith by providing seach engines with a SID. How? (I really don't know much about this stuff, but I'm learning.) Thanks CharleyShipman
jmoore04 Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 Hey guys, This is my first post here, but I have been using this site for the past week now for help on building my store. charleyshipman, I agree with the rest, I don't know how much your paying for web hosting, but you really do need more bandwidth. When you get up there in the search engines, your bandwidth will start sky-rocketing in use. I am using anywhere from 3GB to 5GB of bandwidth per month. The host I am with gives you 30GB of bandwidth per month and 2GB of space * I am not affiliated with the said hosting provider, I just host my sites with them. [*edit* - Really? Please do not post hosting company 'deals' - Matti]
Guest Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 [*edit* - same as previous post - Matti] charley, you sure that isnt your webspace you are allowed? I am sure you get more than that for transfer bandwidth. I have used 500mb of transfer so far this month and my site isnt even listed anywheres but here <_<
wizardsandwars Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 I'm surprised this thread has lasted as long as it has with all of the *commercial adveretising*. They're usually pretty strict about stuff like that, especially when it concerns hosting. Anyways, I'd say that you need at least 2 GB of transfer per month to get started. And there should be an option in you admin for "Allow Spider Sessions" that shoudl be set to false. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. I thought it was good to leave spider session enabled......otherwise you wouldnt be listed on a search engine....?
wizardsandwars Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 You were incorrect. If you allow spiders to have a 'Session' then they will get an SID appended to all of the URLS it transverses, subsequentially putting SIDs in the URLs it indexes. After the session has been killed, customers that try to follow the URL with the dead session will receive an error from your shop, thereby making the indexed url useless. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. wizardsandwars Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 As you will eventually find out, search engine spiders are a tenacious breed. You'd need ot more than just disallowing session ID to keep them from spidering your site. You will, however, need enough bankdwidth for them to be able to do so. Last month, spiders on our site used over half a gb of transfer themselves just spidering our site. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. Guest Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 wow.... ok then I guess I will disable it, thanks for the tip ;)
jmoore04 Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 Hey guys sorry for my previous post, I didn't read the rules until a little bit ago, and like I said, I am not affiliated with the said host, I just use them for my own hosting needs. I see now that I was in the wrong, so I appologize for the mistake I made. :) Anyways, back on topic... Charles, I am not sure if you are currently working on your site or not, but I noticed a few missing images on the main page and a table border around the boxes, if your not working on it, you may want to turn the outside border off around the boxes. You may want to consider disableing the right column all together, since it is compressing everything in your center column too much on a 800x600 screen resolution. You may also want to work on your product titles a bit, some of them are quite long. Other than that, keep up the work on it, and I will check back again to see how you are progressing. :)
