boxes, how to change borders and styles?

Another beginner question. I've been searching the forums, and google, but havent figured a way to change the styles for the boxes. further more i want the boxes to be more dynamic. Rather then have the same style (border, background) for each box.

 

Can anyone point me to a tutorial or any information that can help me customize boxes.
