I have downloaded both the .gz version for Linux/Unix and the Windows zipped version. I have uploaded the .gz version to my webspace, but am COMPLETELY CLUELESS about what to do now.

Any tips on how to get started would be most welcome - step by step stuff please!

Thanks for your response, but you've jumped to somewhere unkown to me! I have a Windows zipped version on my pc and the .gz version on my pc. Step 1?

if you have 'shell access' to your webserver, then you can uncompress the files, else you will need to uncompress the files locally, then ftp them to your server.

OK, I feel like a complete dunce here... I am an experienced web person, HTML, CGI, etc, but I am starting from point zero with this, which anyone who knows what they're doing with osC has obviously forgotten about!

Do I uncompress the zipped Windows stuff locally, then upload. What's with the .gz file? Am I using both? If so how??? I am, as I explained earlier, looking for step-by-step instructions starting from point zero. I.E. I have downloaded oscommerce2.2ms2.tar.gz & oscommerce2.2ms2.zip, I have a host supporting MySQL & PHP, what do I do now (step-by-step please!)?

your best bet is to go through the documentation, for installation. you probably do not have shell access to do the uncompression on the server, so i would delete that file, and uncompress the zip file locally, then upload the files to your server.

install a localhost for testing, development, etc.
