homefree scott Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 ok.. i started to redesign the website for the place i am working for because it is ugly.. anyways.. we signed up for a verisign account to be able to process credit cards when we are signing people up for memberships and various locations... i however now have basically been assigned to add an online store to the website.. i have never worked with a form, or database, or coldfusion, asp, php, or anything like that before a week ago and now am getting hopelessly lost and somewhat overwhelmed... anyways.. i uploaded oscommerce to our website and am trying to "install" it... but i don't even know what to put in for our database server.. there is a database on there that someone designed in coldfusion... but it needs to be completely seperate from our online store.. my understanding is that oscommerce needs mySQL.. or is it just supposed to work? anyways.. can someone try to help me at least get os commerce installed? right now. i am getting stuck at the "database server" do i just need to put ftp info in there so a sample database can be uploaded? thanks scott
Brocksburn Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 Hi Scott, but i don't even know what to put in for our database server.. there is a database on there that someone designed in coldfusion... but it needs to be completely seperate from our online store.. my understanding is that oscommerce needs mySQL.. or is it just supposed to work? Yes, osC needs MySQL - is that provided by your host? If so, you'll need to log in to your control panel and create a database and username to use before you can go any further. As you've found, the installation process needs these details. http://wiki.oscommerce.com/docsInstallNew explains how to install osC for the first time. Learn to love the wiki, the wiki docs are your friend ;) Cheers, Ellie (finally getting to put something back for all the help she's received here)
homefree scott Posted April 5, 2004 Author Posted April 5, 2004 i don't think our host provides mysql... we are switching soon though.. so our new one might... i know we have a big coldfusion database, but that probably does no good..
homefree scott Posted April 5, 2004 Author Posted April 5, 2004 ok, our host does have mysql... i had no idea that there were administrative control panels and all that.. anyways.. we went into the control panel.. i didn't see anything to create a new mysql database, but i did see that we have miva cart already for free.. for now we are going to set up miva cart, and i will learn oscommerce on the side, unless someone can convince me to forget the miva cart for one reason or another.
christiansees Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 We have been using Miva for six years. I believe that qualifies us as experienced. The reason that I am reading through these forums. Because Miva is from hell, spawn of satan's cheif demon. Oh excuse me. Did I get carried away there? That's because of the agony that we have had with Miva. Life is too short not to learn from other's mistakes. Learn from our's skip miva. On your last day only you will have to approve or disaprove of how your life has been.
