gordonrp
Hey guys, Firstly Im new here, so hi to everyone! I have designed a few stores before with no troubles but now I need to redisgn an asp based store, to an osc store. I need to design the store completely before switching the nameservers on the domain to point ot my server rather than his old site. All the images and links etc point to the domain, not relative directories. i.e. www.domain.com/images rather than /images/ What can I do about this? Can I create the store on a different domain and then just move it over? i.e. create it at www.mywebsite.com/testshop and then move it to www.mydomain.com/shop when im ready to go live? Am I making any sense? thanks for any help, gp
AlanR
I would set it up on a dummy or test domain. Names are so cheap you can basically discard it when you're done. Once you have it set up on www.dsdkwqem.com to your satisfaction cut the dns over, change the config files and wait till the dns resolves. Visitors will be sent to the old store or the new one as the dns change ripples through to them. AlanR
One caveat here. Talk to the new hosting service and ask them if they can change dns on an existing server account. Some guys like to delete the old one and create a new one. gordonrp
Thanks for your reply Roger, much appreciated. I think I am confusing myself. I have my own server, I have access to all the dns zones etc. and set up my own web space for the domain. What I wanted to do was create the account for inerco.com on my webserver so that I could work on the shop before I switched the domain name dns servers to mine rather than the old company. I can not seem to build the shop there because I have to access it via gordonswebpages.com/~incero but all the files want to load from "incero.com/" etc. So, basically I am creating it at a dummy domain for now, easy enough to copy the shop folder to the new space when going live. But what will I need to change? In what files will the dummy domain be referred to which I will have to change to the new domain. Also, can i simply use phpmyadmin to copy across all the databases? Im confused, has anyone done this before, or can anyone set me straight. Sorry for babbling gp
AlanR
You've got your own server the job is easy, lots of ways to handle it. All you'll need to do is change a few lines in the two configure.php files, copy them over and import the database. phpMyadmin will do it, no problem. Everyone's life should be so easy. :P Local: Mac OS X 10.5.8 - Apache 2.2/php 5.3.0/MySQL 5.4.10 • Web Servers: Linux Tools: BBEdit, Coda, Versions (Subversion), Sequel Pro (db management)
