almost there

i have been following the instructions on the docsInstallNew page. have gotten to the end and here are my concerns and questions.

 

1. steps 1-4 went fine no problems

 

2. to get past step 5 i followed the instuctions on the error page that said to rename the catalog/includes/configure.php file if i was working in a windows environment. i did and that got me past the error page to this page:

The configuration was successful!

 

now i'm assuming the pertinant text here is where it says "The configuration was successful" at the end.

but when i click on either of the links (catalog and administration) they send me to this page:

 

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in /hsphere/local/home/greental/greentallahassee.com/catalog(or admin depending on which link is clicked)/includes/functions/database.php on line 19

Unable to connect to database server!

 

does that mean that the configuration was NOT successful? how do these get resolved?

 

3. i set/reset permissions no problem

 

4.i renamed the install folder. hope that doesn't throw anything off at this point.

 

5. i haven't a clue about htaccess. should i be able to find it via my ftp client (wsftp pro) or do i need to go to my host's control panel. i've looked and can't (yet) find any mention of htaccess. is it a file somewhere in the catalog folder? do i have to create it myself. some other option?
