damon2003 Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Hi, I am in the process of setting up oscommerce on a fasthosts linux server. I have created the web space, created a mysql database. My question is is SSL necessary to set this up. As I understand it, people use the cart to add things to their basket. When they are ready to buy, dont they get transfered to another payment server, i.e. the secure worldpay server, or another payment server. So if this is how it works, then when people enter their credit card details, they are doing on a secure payment server anyway so this means that SSL is not required on my server. Is this the case? any clarification is much appreciated. I may be wrong when I say credit details are entered on the secure payment server. thanks a lot -----
sandralk Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 i chose to get an SSL. I am accepting payments through paypal, so I'm not getting any credit card info directly, but i am collecting customer info and I think that many people just feel more comfortable with it there. I don't know much about other payment servers so I can't answer that question specifically. With paypal, it is true that you are transferred elsewhere to enter payment info.
damon2003 Posted March 25, 2004 Author Posted March 25, 2004 Hi, thanks for reply. does anyone know about the other payment gateways? whether or not credit card info is filled on their own secure server or whether it is done on your own ISP? Also, when I set up SSL on my server, it is a shared server and I know that it create a separate folder called vault2.secure etc for putting the secure stuff in. The non secure htdocs folder remains. So if I get SSL, should I simply just put all the set up files, i.e. catalog etc, in the secure folder, and just follow the online set up process? Then I suppose I could just link to the secure folder from my home page? Is this the way to do it? thanks a lot -----
