Wow, your placement is impressive and you have dynamic pages. This raises a bunch of questions. How long did it take for you to get listed so high? I see you are listed with looksmart. Do you think that made a difference in your placement? Is that a paid service? Did you get your ranking with your own SE optimiztion or did you pay for listing placement?

Whoah!

Slow down there partner, lol.

Every single page of default OSC will get indexed in Google, and nearly every other search engine on the planet without lifting a finger. Placement, however, is another matter entirely.

We've achieved our placement on all of our website (we have several) through SEO. We specialize in SEO. I'll be happy to answer a couple of questions, at no charge for you through email, if you're interested.

Ahh, I see. Search Engine Safe URL's only work for Apache systems and, at the moment, my host uses IIS.

I have apache and Search Engine Safe URL's dont work for me?

Its a windows based apache.

I dident think they worked at all according to the forum posts i have read?

Luckily, you don't need them.

I'm not convinced of your first statement. Check my url and you will see it is not indexed. Some old addresses are but not my latest one, which has been in use for 2-3 weeks now. That may not be enough time to be indexed - I'm not sure. I do know, according to my logs, that google and others have searched my site many times in that period. Prior to the name change, my main url was indexed beginning from last October. But there were never any dynamic pages indexed.

I appreciate the very generous offer. I'm pretty sure I have done much of the normal optimization. It certainly wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion though.

I can't answer this since I don't have an Apache server. But it apparently works for Julie's site (see her earlier post in this thread). Maybe it is specific to each set-up. It does say it is still being worked on.

That fact of the matter is, it's the truth. It's been proven over and over and over again in these very same forums.

With little or no high PR backlinks, 2-3 weeks is hardly enough time to expect your listings to be updated. With your site, the way it is today, and with the backlinks you currently have, you can expect your listings to only be updated about once every 3 months.

Our sites are usually updated about every 3 or 4 days.

Jack if you can't get links elsewhere, the paid for inclusions like Yahoo and Looksmart directories do a good job

Thanks for the suggestion Tom. That may be an option if I can't do it myself. Although it is supposed to be doable by anyone if they put in the time.

Oh, three months! Then that would explain it. I know a lot of people claim they have high listing placements but until you posted yours, I've never seen anyone back it up.

I'll send you an email and take you up on your offer. I'm really curious now what it is that I am doing wrong. I thought I had this SEO subject at least fairly well understood.

Can't say that I blame them. Teaching the world about SEO, especially for free, isn't exactly in the best interests of merchants. Why would they want to show competition how to achieve the same success they did?

Like I said, you dont' have to lift a finger to get listed. Placement however, is a another matter.

Good point. Although if someone does a search on a subject of interest and looks at the top ranking sites, they would get just as much information it seems.

At this point, I would be pleased to just get listed.

Sure, if those top ranking sites are 'powered by OSC'. Seeing a top ranked OSC site though, can give other OSC shop owners ideas on things they can do to their OSC site that would improve index rankings.

Osc certainly isn't ignored by Search Engines, in fact they cannot seem to get enough of Oscommerce sites (just take a look at all the "I'm being spidered by" posts) that are on here.

Your problem it seems is impatience. 2-3 weeks is nowhere near enough (Google) unless you get a couple of highish PR pages to link to you.

You are probably right Burt. But since my first url was active for four months and only one page ever got indexed, I was just wondering if I was wasting my time and effort. It would seem not, so I will continue optimizing and see what happens.

So am I to understand that if my urls have a "?" then my urls are not search engine friendly?

I thought that the latest version of OSC had a SID kill in it already? But my urls look like this......

product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=1

A page with a ? in it denotes a dynamic page (i.e., information on the page can be changed programmatically as the page is loaded). Here are two quotes from Google's Guidelines regarding dynamic pages.

Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.

If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a '?' character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them small.

That said, if you have read the posts here, the general opinion of those more knowledgeable on the subject than me is that dynamic pages get searched just as easy a static pages (except, of course, for my site. :) ). The lastest version of OSC does have a sid killer option in it but that is a different subject than dynamic pages. It won't change how your links look. You may be thinking of the Search Engine Friendly option.

So how do I get rid of the " ? " in my urls?

Thanks in advance

Tammy

You can use the Search Engine Friendly option if it works for you. You can also find a stand-alone program, called a mod_rewrite, that will do this for you. Beyond that I don't know. But, like I said, the general opinion of the forum seems to be that you don't need to worry about it.

Check and see how Google is seeing your page by using this link:

http://www.webconfs.com/search-engine-spider-simulator.php. Check to see if the spiders/bots are getting any errors on your pages.

I checked my url using the above link and my report came out like this:

Spidered Links :

http://www.discountcelebrityphoto.com/index.php?osCsid =f0981b2f6c38d6ed8f260f5044e4e4ea

Can anyone explain to me how I can get rid of the ?osCsid=? Isnt that what I need to get rid of?

Thanks

Just make sure that in your Admin that "Prevent Spider Sessions" is set to true, and that you have a list if spiders to prevent sessions for at:

/includes/spiders.txt

Also make sure that the spider that that simulator simulates is also in that list!

No.

You want spiders to come, but you do not want them to have session IDs in the URLs they visit.

Oh, I understand now .... the "session" is referring to the Session Id's (sids.. the ? with jibberish?)

Another question... After reading and researching, I noticed mention of spider.txt in the "includes" folder, and a robots.txt in the "root" directory.

Do I need both?

Thanks
