Guest
Hi, First of all i am really kindergarden level about setting up a website, I try to do this because i want to learn and save some money in the process. My goal is to set up an online store up and running with oscommerce. Now i have just recently change my webhost with brandblast.com, they have H-sphere control panel. I have enable the oscommerce and make mysql database enable from the H-sphere. Now when I try to go to admin or store using the H-sphere, it says file not found "error 404". Can anybody help what is wrong? Is it because i have to install the oscommerce? I thought the oscommerce is already installed, since i could enable them from the H-sphere control panel. when i hit the admin or store button from the H-sphere, it goes to mydomain.com/admin/index.php or mydomain.com/catalog/ default.php but it gives the message file not found. One more thing I haven't switch my domain name from my previous web host (1and1.com) to this new one (brandblast.com). Is this also the reason? I am really confused of what to do. Please help. ptrau
You are going to have to find out from your host how to access OSC from your admin panel. Normally you wouls use an FTP client like Wise or wsFTP to upload your files and the use a MySQL client like phpMyAdmin to upload your database. Just enabling them from an admin panel usually does not equal an install. Check this out for more basic install info. http://wiki.oscommerce.com/docsInstallNew "Aliiiiive, it's alive, it's ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!"
Guest
Thanks Ptrau, So, you are saying that the oscommerce is not installed yet. And i have to install the OSC by FTP using the software client that you mentioned. My domain website now is empty, i haven't done anything yet. If i use my domain website for the OSC, meaning i install the OSC on my domain website. Then when i do the editing, uploading pictures, etc, does this make people could see what's going on my website? So, it is a good idea to use a "temporary" website (i was given one by my web host), to install the OSC software. Then build the store, after it is done then do the switching of the temporary website to my real website. Is this a good practice? My question might look stupid, but i am very-very novice on this area. Thanks,
Guest
I forgot one thing: can you suggest a good oscommerce hosting company? Considering that i am a novice player in this area. Thanks
ptrau
ok....a couple of things. Do you have a web hosting account with an active webspace? If you do, do you have FTP access? If so, you will need the FTP address. It's usually ftp.yourwebsite.com but not always If you have enabled the MySQL database, you would have received the following required info: database host: database name: user name password Do you have the FTP and Database information? If not, contact your host and ask them to provide it to you. If you are currently using 1and1.com for webhosting, I would highly recommend that you stay with them. I have a number of my clients using them and I have a number of sites hosted there too. Keep in mind that hosting your DOMAIN is not the same as hosting your WEBSITE. You have to have a hosting account. If you haven't repointed your domain to your new host, you will have to use your IP address in the configure files until you do change. Guest
Paul, I currently have a "free" 3 year contract with 1and1.com, but looks like this package is not good enough to set up an oscommerce based store. how do i know that they could support oscommerce or not? I could not find any PHP3/4 in the control panel only mysql administration tool. Should i upgrade to their professional package? I am assuming you are familiar with their package. Looks like you already have experience setting up OSC with 1and1.com, then which package is good enough to set up an online store. My images would about 200 images. Paul, if you don't mind can you be my guide on how to install this osc thing, iam really lost of what to do. Thanks a lot.
