Payment Gateway advice.

I'm in Australia and about to sign up with a hosting company here that uses a 3RD party gateway which is in America. Can someone explain to me why they might be using a company in the united states and how that would have an adverse effect on my transactions? The gateway they have listed is 2CHECKOUT which is at http://www.2checkout.com

I've been to the 2checkout site to have a look and they have this information under their rates. Are these rates reasonable?

RATES:

One-time set up fee of $49.

5.5% commission plus a $0.45 charge on each total sale.

That's it! There are no leases, no monthly fees, no application fees, no software to buy, no secure server to purchase, no statement fees and no per payment fees!

Rates include Credit Card or Check Processing fees. There are no fees for a gateway or third party company.

It's all included, the 5.5% and $0.45 is the total you will pay for each sale.

First of all, those rates are NOT reasonable, at all. And you may have difficulty with some international currencies, and you may also have trouble with support.

Second, this topic will be nuked as soon as a forum moderator sees it. It seems we're not allowed to discuss payment gateways here.

We should be able to discuss 2checkout as it is a recommended gateway as per http://www.oscommerce.com/about/gateways - so I think this thread won't get nuked unless it starts to meander off course. Could be wrong though.

The 2checkout is good when you are first starting out - it's certainly (in my opinion) better to offer this rather than just offer Paypal (for example). Or do both.

However, as W&W said, the rates are not the greatest, particularly if you are selling low ticket items, eg:

Product A is $10.00

Fees (2CO) are: 5.5% + 0.45 = $1.00.

So in effect the actual transaction rate on a $10 item is $1 ! = 10% !!

There are at least 2 other 3rd party processors out there that I would prefer over 2checkout. I'm not sure if either of them will process currency from your country, but if so, using them would save you quite a bit of money. if you're interested, email me at [email protected], and I'll give you the urls.
