What i asked is how to check that the SID is blocked?? Where do you do this?? And are spiders good or bad...? Hmmm, the rest was in my previous post - what you people think?? Sweet, Nick
sam6
spiders are good thats how you get indexed in the serch engines the problem is is osc gives these spiders osids which is not good oscms2 comes with a session killer for this purpose and it works as long as the spider user agent is listed in the spider.txt so like you catch a spider producing osids you find that spider user agent and put it in the spider.txt land that is sapose to take car of it i just wish i could get an answer to the above question they dont like to answer thes typ of questions becaus they think its been coverd in the fourm some where but i search and search and what i cant find is a complete discriptoin of this for newbies everybody thinks we all should understand what they are talking about well this should be documented in the some documentation some ware in detail most of these posts start like this and end up on how to improve your sit for rankings well we all want to know all about spiders spider.txt what we need and what wee dont need based on version of osc and what ever any one elts can contribute to our understanding it would save tons of time in this forum for all of us if some one knows all about this it would be awsome if you could HELP one more time

Punctuation is your friend. So is spell-check. If your site is indexed with an oscsid attached, then the oscsid will show up in the search listings. Is this a security risk? Well...good question. Do a Google search for "oscsid" and it pops up some very interesting information. If you've put Yahoo!'s user-agent into spiders.txt, there should be no more oscsids producted by it. However, a huge search engine like Yahoo! may well use more than one user-agent. Make sure you've covered all of it. Yes, the documentation is incomplete. Yes, the forums are full of the same information repeated over and over again (usually because people don't search for the answers properly before asking a question that's been asked a hundred times). I doubt there's a "complete description for newbies" out there...but perhaps if you made a donation to the developers they would put one up for you. You have to realize that nobody who posts on the forums is being paid for doing so. Open source software is a great thing, but it can be tough to deal with if you're not much of a programmer. Search hint - if you want to search for more than one word, put a + in front of each one. Such as: +oscsid +spider If you search for: oscsid spider you will get all posts with either of those words. However, if you search for: +oscsid +spider you will only get posts with both of those words. Chris Dunning osCommerce, Contributions Moderator Team Please do not send me PM! sam6
But I need to Know why yahoo is doing what its doing. The only spider agent i get is yahooseeker/1.1 yahooseeker/1.0 yahoo! slurp and that is it I still get a session id every so often
Chris Dunning
Spiders work by following links. Somewhere out there on the web is a link to your site (quite possibly in another search engine) that contains an oscsid. Once the spider follows that link, it keeps the oscsid while it looks at your site. Chris Dunning osCommerce, Contributions Moderator Team Please do not send me PM! sam6
Also my sit is pretty new the only spiders that have been to my site are yahoo and google and google did not get osids there are no links to my site and my question was dose yahoo remember the osid from the time it spiderd my site like yesterday and i did not have there user agent in well now its in and once in a while i get the user agent from them will this stop. According to sombody on this site you anly need the top twenty search engine user agents and if thats the case would having osids out there on any search engine be a security risk
sam6
can anybody tell me what the risk is
Chris Dunning
Google spiders go out every 3 weeks or so, if I remember correctly. The risk is that someone can hijack that session...if they follow the link with a session ID already there, they pick up that session...which could allow them to checkout as a different person. wizardsandwars
They are just previously collected urls with the sids attached. Eventually, they will go away. The best you can do it make sure that it doesn't collect more uRLs with SIDs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.
