Set up site to charge Sales Tax

I'm almost ready to go live but now I need to set up my site to do sales tax for Ohio. Each county has a different sales tax rate. How do I describe each county and how do I set the tax rate for it? Is their something to download to fix this problem easily like a contrib?

Also, if I'm only accepting orders from United States should I erase all the other countries in Localization? (that would take forever if so!)

Thanks for your help.

There's semething for this in the contributions section...it's called "sales tax by county" or something like that. You could quickly erase all but the US with phpMyAdmin.

I'm glad I've gotten some replies because this seems like a real grey area to me. Ohio Sales tax is 6%. On top of that vounties and regional transit authorities may each levy sales tax in multiples of .25% up to 1.5%. The total combined rate - state, county and transit authority - may not exceed 9%.

I'm under the understanding that I have to account for the extra counties sale tax. I doubt I'm going to sell that many products in Ohio but still I need to account for it right? Like I said I'm not sure.

Well I would contact the state on that. It seems to me if you are collecting tax for coun ties it has to be paid to the counties. Usually you collect tax based on where you are located in the state, city, county. And it is sent to each of the taxing authorities state, city, county. The transit authority probably goes to the county in lew of a city tax. You might want to check first and maybe save yourself a lot of work.

When I went to get my vendor's license the Ohio Department of Taxation said that I indeed had to collect according to the different counties. I checked out some other Ohio OsCommerce sites and they don't seem to be doing this just using a the flat 6% tax rate.

I'm meeting with a small business advisor on Monday so I guess I'll just have to wait until then.

Thanks!

I am having the same problem here in California. We have 58 counties in California, each one with a separate sales tax rate. I am operating out of San Francisco County, and we have to pay the BART tax as well as the normal city, county, and state sales tax. By the same token, because Alameda County and Contra Costa County have BART as well, we are required to pay for those sales tax rates as well. For all of the other counties in California, we just pay the normal sales tax.

How do I go about setting this up in osCommerce?

I will be trying out these contribs this week. Hopefully it will be painless. I think you set the tax rate separately by county and then identify the county by zip codes. I'll post back here when I figure it out. What a pain in the ass!
