Dakota
My ISP says to even configure osC, I need to install SSL on my server. I tried to do that but looks like I need to buy a certificate from Verisign for hundreds of dollars. Is this the only way to go? Are you guys all paying this? TerryK
I have a Thawte certificate for my site. Cost: about US $150 (I think). If you are going to be accepting credit card details and processing the orders yourself, you DEFINITELY need to do so through SSL. If you plan on using a gateway to process your transactions, it may not be as critical. And these days, it also seems to be preferred by customers entering their personal information. There are other SSL certificate companies out there, with varying degrees of price (and reputation). I chose Thawte before they were with Verisign because they DID have a good reputation, and have decided so far to continue with them. The last time I renewed, I just about got ticked off enough to go elsewhere, but in the final hours (almost literally), was assisted by a surprisingly helpful employee and decided to leave it alone. We'll see what next year brings. :) HTH, Terry Terry Kluytmans Contribs Installed: Purchase Without Account (PWA); Big Images, Product Availability, Description in Product Listing, Graphical Infobox, Header Tags Controller, Login Box, Option Type Feature, plus many layout changes & other mods of my own, like: Add order total to checkout_shipment Add order total to checkout_payment Add radio buttons at checkout_shipping (for backorder options, etc.) Duplicate Table Rate Shipping Module Better Product Review Flow * If at first you don't succeed, find out if there's a prize for the loser. *
user99999999
You dont need it to install or configure but you will need it if you expect customers to buy anything. Also I think there is a contrib(s) that bypasses osc checkout and goes straight to paypal ssl.
Dakota
I am just trying to get this off the ground. I am not worried about payments now so I don't need to worry about SSL right now. Is there anything to "launch" to start adding products?. What is Step 1? By all apearances everything is installed.

Sanguinarius
In the configuration folder I found a piece of text that read: define('ENABLE_SSL', false); // secure webserver for checkout procedure? and I changed the "true" to "false" and then reuploaded the file. You can do it that way. --Sanguinarius If you're reading this, I'm probably pulling my hair out. ;> *waiting for osCommerce 3.0 alpha 6* (I'm after the coupons.) Guest
I got my ssl cert from geotrust...$25 Works fine. My exceedingly helpful webhost purchased and installed it for me and it works like a charm. It is not necessary to get your site working...but now-a-days, is almost essential to build trust in your customers.
Dakota
$25? How did you manage that?. Their site has no prices below $159.

fmerrill
no. it's not necessarily for a shared SSL. most hosts who offer shared SSL do it for free. one of my hosting providers gives me a GeoTrust cert for 4.99 USD per month, so I get over 2 years for the same price as if I purchased it direct from GeoTrust, and it is not a shared cert, it is for my domain only.
