Wiki Effort

Recommended Posts

There are so many posts from new osC users who don't know where to look for help with their installation and configuration.

I don't know if it's been suggested before, but I wonder whether it would be worth either:

1. Renaming the "Wiki Effort" link to "osC Installation Guide" or

2. Adding a new link to "osC Installation Guide" that links directly to the docs section of the Wiki Effort.

Just a thought...

Add order total to checkout_payment

Add radio buttons at checkout_shipping (for backorder options, etc.)

From http://wiki.org

The simplest online database that could possibly work.

Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.

Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.

Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users.

Mibble,

It isn't the Wiki Effort SITE that I think should be renamed -- just the LINK NAME in the forum.

I had never heard of Wiki before I downloaded osC, and no doubt the same can be said for many others. So all I'm saying is give them a better visual clue to its use. :)

His point is that many new users don't know what the hell "Wiki" is or means.

Tell them to "go look at the Wiki documenation" and they'll probably "what is wiki?" or "I'm looking for osCommerce documentation, not Wiki documenation"

As the content in the Wiki section is a work in progress, linking to it via "Documentation" may bring in confusion later when 2.2 is ready and documentation for it is available.

What is available now in the Wiki site fits "Knowledge Base" more than what "Documentation" does.

"Collaborative Documentation" is a little too long, with "Wiki Documentation" fitting it perfectly.

True, it's questionable to what lies behind "Wiki Effort" and will be renamed soon to "Wiki Documentation Effort" - or something better if suggestions are made :D

Harald, thanks for your reply, and all the efforts put forth on osC. I am so impressed with its functionality!

I think it's the word "Wiki" that is confusing for those not in-the-know. Could the link not be to "osC Documentation" or "osC Knowledge Base," or even "osC Help" on the forum? A disclaimer could be placed at the top of the link page stating that it's not so much a manual as a work in progress, with a link to the Wiki Effort description.

I think many people would be willing to help themselves if they only knew where to look, and a better link definition would be a huge step toward that, IMHO. :)

No kidding!

I am very new to osCommerce & have spent a fair amount of time over the last 2 days looking for documentation. I'd innocently expected to find some (reasonably obvious) reference to it on www.oscommerce.com

Eventually I thought I'd found "the" documentation at ** but still spent a good while looking for something downloadable (no broadband available yet here). So how does what I found relate to wiki.oscommerce.com?

I don't mean to complain - osCommerce looks great - but it'd be a lot more accessible to perhaps slow people like me if the documentation was more accessible.

It's not just the link title Wiki - it needs a top menu location on oscommerce.com ...... or was I looking at the wrong download site too....?!

So TerryK thanks for saying what was on my mind!

The reason why there is no link on the main support site is due to the Wiki effort being a work in process.

The difference between our Wiki site and the site you posted is that the content of our site is copyrighted to the project. The content on the other site is copyrighted to a person who has no relation to osCommerce at all, and had infact took original content written by Melinda without her permission, which is the reason why we do not endorse their site being supported here.

Kindergarten games aside, I have been working on improving the support site for the past few weeks, and hope to make the changes live soon, including better awareness of the documentation currently available.

Harald,

I got to tell you that you and your contributors have made and something great. This shopping cart software is a functionable as anything I have seen. And I have to say I have made a light year jump from Harvard Basic and Visual Basic.

I have to applaud you personally, your developers and the forum moderators for everything you have done to bring this opportunity to us all. I know my boss would never but I would like to in some small way show my thanks. I understand that you all take donations, how would I go about doing that....

Kudos on the name change to "Collaborative Documentation Effort" on the forum pages -- here's hoping it actually makes a difference! :)
