I have a question about hosting, if you live in the USA is it best to have a hosting company there or overseas? Also I thought that by having a oscommerce site was because it was more easier to maintain and cut down the cost. Please can somebody exlpain this to me.

It's best to have your hosting where your target customers are.

If you target US customers, then hosting in the US makes sense. Why? There's a shorter [network] distance between your customer and your server, which generally translates into less latency (as in, less time for the page to start loading) and faster page loads.

If you target UK customers, then hosting in the UK makes sense.

A traceroute to your hosting server will reveal that

the communication is in milliseconds much less than

the time to load some images and content.

The bottom line. It does not matter which country your

hosting company resides. If your worried about speed

optimize your images and pages sizes.

The current exchange rate favours UK customers hosting

with US hosting companies. Suggest a payment for at

least a year or two to take advantage of this.

ensure you get 24/7 cover with your hosting if it is located in a different time zone.

Your online success is Paramount.

I seem to be coming up with a diffrent problem with hosting.

First I signed up for a ?4pm hosting service, which I thought was what I needed. After looking in to it I found out that the service did not inculed SSL, so I change companys. Now I pay ?19pm for a business hosting service, I then went to get SSL put on to my site and guess what it would cost me ?250 for them it place SSL on and ?75 per qurater. Ok, now do the sums, that will come to ?778pa. So this got me thinking, if I got a dedaicted server with the same company it would only cost me ?499pm plus ?60pa for SSL (if I install SSL my self). Big saving don't you think?

But wait, don't I have to place anti-virus and security software? Yeah I do, so there is me thinking Nortons was only ?40 for my PC, so how much more could it be for a server? ?100 maybe? No, try ?1000, now that is just way out of my buget.

OScommerce = Open Source = Free, cool. But what about the god darn hosting fees????

Am I missing a trick here? Can anybody point me in to a cheaper direction?

Thanks,

Pompeylad

Thanks for that Yesudo, but I really do not want a shared server.

My veiw is if I am going to rent a dedicated server then why should I fork out for the up keep when the server is no where near me? Shouldn't the up keep be inculeded in to the price?
