cathy1027418 Posted February 22, 2004 Posted February 22, 2004 I attempted to follow the directions to upload my Catalog and Admin files. I uploaded them into the www folder. Then how do I make it do a normal installation. I could not figure how to Install. I am so confused and am not sure what I did or am doing. And now I can't see the site which I saw when my web host gave me the link to there. My host provided me the site and I went right to work on it, creating categories, subcategories, adding images, etc. Of course I did all that before I read all I should have read. Since then I started uploading Catalog and Admin into my www folder. When the Catalog did not come up, I decided to delete everything I just uploaded (probably not the wisest move), and of course I still have nothing. What did I do? Then I saw there's a Root directory located in a Users folder which was in a Special folder. So should I upload the Catlog and Admin into that folder. Am I thoroughly screwed now? Should I ask my web host to start me from scratch? I don't know why I've made this soooo complicated; it seemed like I could do this. Do you understand my predicament? HELP!?! Can you help me get back to the beginning and start again? Can you tell me what to do?
Guest Posted February 22, 2004 Posted February 22, 2004 I assume some installation instructions would be helpful right about now. ;) http://wiki.oscommerce.com/docsInstallNew
cathy1027418 Posted February 22, 2004 Author Posted February 22, 2004 Thank you for those instructions. So now I guess I have another problem. I went to the Install page and got this message: "Host 'mdswin1' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server." This doesn't make sense since my host server set me up with OS Commerce and said they support it. Do I need to get in touch with my web host now? Additional questions that have come to my mind: 1) If I have a web host, does that mean Shared Server? Which would mean that persistent connections should be disabled for shared servers? 2) Database Name: Am I creating that name at the time I am going through the Installation process? I can make it up at that time? 3) Username: Database username The username used to connect to the database server. An example username is 'mysql_10'.Note: Create and Drop permissions are required at this point of the installation procedure. So what is Create and Drop permissions ... ? I don't see those as options. The username is my username! This part is simple, isn't it? 4) Last question: I have a web site and a home page (index.html) and I want to there to be a link on my home page to this Catalog I'm hoping to create. Is this possible to do? What do I need to know? Maybe I should pose the above questions as a new topic? Thanks for your help.
gazzzzzza Posted February 24, 2004 Posted February 24, 2004 Your host for mysql database access seems to be set at mdswin1 - is this correct? mine is set to localhost 2) the database is created when you go through the install process. mine is named oscommerce 3) your mysql username is set up in the mysql database if you have not set up any users via telnet or phpmyadmin etc then this will need to be done and may explain why its not working. It might have been setup by your webhosting company so you should ask them if they have set one up for you and what the details are. create and drop permissions are set within mysql. permissions are granted to mysql users. example permissions are: insert, delete, update, select, drop, create. When these are granted to a user, they can create/delete database tables, insert data into/select data from the tables, and update or delete data within the tables. The reason create/drop is required is cos oscommerce automatically creates all of the tables within your database. to do this, it needs the correct permissions and access to the database. 4) the link from your website should be easy to create if you know how to create a weblink then all you need to do is make the destination to whichever folder the oscommerce index file is in hope this helps always here to offer some useless advice....
