Problems changing file permissions...

I am having the same problem on several servers I am trying to install this on. After I upload/install all the files, I get to my catalog and it gives me:

Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home/unbreakable/www/www/catalog/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file.

I did get the error for the install directory, but I was able to delete that sucessfully. To fix this error, I tried to CHMOD the configure file as required. However, the CHMOD doesnt take. No matter what I change it to, it just sits at the same permissions. The whole install goes perfectly, but afterwards I just cannot change the configure.php to the right permissions. I have tried changing the permissions for both configure.php files, but nothing happens. This has happened on my personal server, and a professional web hosting server (UNIX)

Any idea what is causing this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

ws_ftp should do this no problem as I use ws_ftp pro right click the file select properties and set to read only for all three terms chmod 444
