Juha Posted February 20, 2004 Posted February 20, 2004 I am almost ready with my pages: http://www.sotataito.com but there are many things to do, biggest is perhaps translating the pages into English. What about speed and such issues. It seemed a bit laggy tonight. Too heavy graphics? Anyway, please let me know how I can improve on my site. Cheers, Juha
Guest Posted February 21, 2004 Posted February 21, 2004 Yes, as you mentioned, the speed is an issue. I have a fast connection and it took a few seconds for the site to load up here. Not only that, it seems even after all the pictures are loaded and nothing is being downloaded, when I scroll down it 'lags' as it scrolls. The horizontal line textured background you've used also takes a while to load. Going from page to page on your site, the same issues. You definitely need to reduce the image sizes (unless its a problem with where the site is being hosted).
Juha Posted February 21, 2004 Author Posted February 21, 2004 Hi Speedy, and thanks for pointing that out! I moved the bg definition from the table to the stylesheet which seems to help. Have to see what I can do about the images. maybe cut into bits so they load in parts? any suggestions?
Guest Posted February 21, 2004 Posted February 21, 2004 What program did you use to create the images? If you used photoshop, when you export the image or 'save for web', there are many options that you have. It lets you choose the file types and the quality/size etc in that export 'wizard' for lack of abetter term. From there you can play with the settings (Jpeg/Jpeg better quality), there are some slider bars you can use to adjust the quality. Within that same dialog box, somewhere on the bottom usually it shows you the size of the file with your current settings. As you make changes, that file size updates to show you the effect on the size. This way you can play around w/ the settings and find a combination that gives you files of good enough quality while decreasing the file size a little. This should hopefully help...at least a little...
Juha Posted February 21, 2004 Author Posted February 21, 2004 yes, I am using Photoshop but I have just saved the images as jpg and adjusted the quality of the compression in the regular manner. Maybe I'll give it ago and try to fiddle with the save for web gadget. Thanks for the tip! I'd better try and make a more simple background image too, I tried to load the pages without it altogether, and it was much faster. I will also go through my css files to optimise them.
Juha Posted February 23, 2004 Author Posted February 23, 2004 What, over 100 views and only Speedy bothered to comment?! Are the pages that bland you can't think anything to say? Come on! Any comments are better than no comments at all.
cottage-rose Posted February 23, 2004 Posted February 23, 2004 I'm not sure its the size of the pictures, something else seems to be going on. Each page kind of rolls down from the top as its opening. Other sites with larger pictures open right up. I also use a high speed cable connection. Shari Cottage Rose - Gifts, Crafts and Collectibles
burt Posted February 23, 2004 Posted February 23, 2004 It looks like a shop that has the "center shop" modification. It is jerky when loading pages because of the fact you have tables inside tables inside tables inside tables all doing nothing. Nested tables are bad news. The look of it is OK, not bad, but it could be much faster if you use a clean version of Oscommerce with just a few stylesheet calls. Rather than a bunch of nested tables!
Juha Posted February 23, 2004 Author Posted February 23, 2004 It looks like a shop that has the "center shop" modification. It is jerky when loading pages because of the fact you have tables inside tables inside tables inside tables all doing nothing. Nested tables are bad news. Changing that would require a major overhaul of the site, right? When I first examined the center shop mod, I didn't quite understand why it was so complex, but I assumed there was a good reason for this. So I used it as it was. I wonder whether it would be possible to downsize the number on nested tables in the current version of my site, and achieve better load times? I'll have to look into this. Thanks for pointing that out, Burt! I browsed my page with Opera and Netscape, and noticed the tables and cells don't show as intented with them. Also, Netscape loads my English pages as default, although it should be the Finnish pages.
speed2 Posted February 24, 2004 Posted February 24, 2004 hi, which template system are you using? is it STS? if you used STS, could you please help me set up the way you have the shooping cart info at the top? thanks

Juha Posted February 24, 2004 Author Posted February 24, 2004 Hi, I considered using a template system but in the end I just made the changes manually. So can't help you there, sorry. I used 'cart in header' contribution for my cart info: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,1079 HTH
Juha Posted February 24, 2004 Author Posted February 24, 2004 Hey, I removed the striped background and the pull down category search. It seems to make a difference. Does it load and scroll fast enough now?
burt Posted February 24, 2004 Posted February 24, 2004 It does now load much quicker, and in fact looks better also.
Juha Posted February 24, 2004 Author Posted February 24, 2004 That's good to hear. I wouldn't want loose business because of slow pages. Now I can concentrate on other parts of the site, and maybe think about the tables issue on a later date. Cheers!
