DontKnowNothingYet Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Dear all. I am a newbie and hope to get some osCommerce 101 help if you don't mind. I am slowly reading all the post and Wiki documentation to learn about this wonderful osCommerce project. Hopefully, I will be able to put something up for my shop soon(not very soon though as I have lots to learn.) Anyway, I am using Netfirms as my hosting company and osCommerce comes as a free product(they called it Netfirms Commerce Pro.) Unfortunately, the URL is way too long as: www.mydomain.com//shop/nsinformation/catalog/default.php. I was told to put a re-direct on my www.mydomain.com to point all visitors to the aforementioned. May I please ask if you experts have any other suggestions? What I really want to have the have www.mydomain.com to be the main storefront. Many many thanks in advance.
user99999999 Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Hi, I would recomend you get a new hosting company and install osCommerse MS2 yourself.
bloodshoteyes Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 You can use a home page on your website. Just put a button link to the shopping cart as something like view my products, and let the OSC cart take it from there. I don't really agree with the prior post. If you are that new to shopping carts or PHP you are going to need some tech help to get it up and running. It really isn't an out of the box cart. It will take some time to get to where you are satisfied it is working for you. Some thing you might consider, get you some cheap server space, like Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) mod_perl/1.26 mod_throttle/2.11 PHP/4.1.0 FrontPage/4.0.4.3 mod_ssl/2.8.9 OpenSSL/0.9.6f. Then download OSC 2.2 MS2 and play with it. Give it the look you want, with the mods you need..Do backups all the time. And if you blow it up you can always restore it to some point where everything was working, instead of starting from scratch.... Good Luck Fellow nooooobie
DontKnowNothingYet Posted February 19, 2004 Author Posted February 19, 2004 Thanks very much for the great suggestion, Dave and Mike. I am totally new to PHP and webstore and probably stick with the already made osCommerce provided by Netfirms. Simply put up a homepage and link to the the shopping cart instead. I searched around and considered purchasing Largarde's and other shopping cart. However, osCommerce is the best I can find now. Yahoo and others are easy to use as well but my concern is that I have to stick with those hosting companies for life. Once I decide to move to other firms, my shop is totally gone!! Many thanks again. Good luck and wishing you all the best with your business/e-store!!!
